I have an RV4 and think it is the best tent I have had. This was my second Oztent.

I would probably have gone for the slightly larger RV5 had they been available when I got mine. I have the Ozpod, plus the deluxe side and front panels and the fly.

Biggest drawback for most is the length, folded, which comes in at about 2.5 metres. Akthough it will fit inside a Troopy, it generally needs a roof rack. I have an ARB tradesman's rack, and that works fine.

They are tough and should you need any after-sales help, the boys at Oztent are the best I have come across.

Hi Bazza,

We have an Oztent RV3 which is OK for the two of us, but for two adults and a baby I would recommend the RV5. It is deeper than the RV4 and would provide that much more usable space.

As funds dictate, you can add a pair of side panels which give a semi enclosed space under the awning. The peak side panels are particularly good.

The only "bad thing" about the Oztent is the length when folded up. At 2.1m it nessesitates carrying on a roof rack, but that is not a negative for us. We carry ours on the side of the roof rack against the basket. The basket (with a canvas bag) contains the swags, gas bottle and other bulkier items thus leaving more room in the vehicle.

Absolutely no other negatives we can think of.

The Oztent really is worth the investment and you only need to peruse the website to see all the accessories available.

Like all of the above, we have other top brand tents in the shed, but the OzTent is the best tent that we have ever owned and now the only tent that comes out. It would have to be the easiest and quickest tent to put up. We went for the RV4, heaps of room. The only difference with the RV5 is that it is deeper. We have a few accessories, the Fly and the Standard side panel. The side panel keeps the wind off of you and gives a far greater outside area. Another great plus, is you have every thing set up in 1 bag, no separate bag of poles. Sure they might be long, but it all fits neatly into 1 bag.

Another very satisfied owner of a fantastic tent.

Cheers

HI guys, there have been a couple of comments about the length of these tents when folded, what about the weight? Cheers, doc.

Hi Stephen

Looks like a great setup. Some questions if I may.

Do you leave the fly attached to the tent when packed up?

Is a fly necessary?

Do you have issues with condensation inside the tent or is that why you have the fly?

Hi Steve
We love our RV4, they are a great tent.

Now to your questions regarding the fly.

We leave the fly zipped to the tent all the time. It makes no difference when folding it up, just a couple of extra minutes to peg it out each time. To be honest we have never had any problems with condensation, even before the fly. As we have the double swag set up inside, we always have the front door open and only the mesh net door closed, and all windows open as well. I find it good to keep the bird dropping off of the main tent.

I know that people have reported issues with condensation, but we even had that happen in our Southern Cross canvas tent, so in the rights conditions, it can happen in any type of tent.

Is the fly necessary - well that comes down to personal choice. I like to keep the tent free of bird droppings and it also keeps the elements off of the tent as well. The main roof of the fly is silver, so it would have some radiation effect, reflecting heat away from the tent in warmer/hot weather.

Another great tip that I picked up here from this forum, is when we had the tent folded and ready to put it in the bag, we always used to lift the tent into the bag, always with a little pushing and squeezing. Now all we do is simply put the bag over the folded tent, turn it over and zip the bag up, a very lot easier.

Cheers

Stephen

We have the RV3 and this year started to use the fly, we did have some condensation not much in the top vee.

We left it attached as you and never found a hassle, 5 min longer or less to set up.

And one to never miss some good advise, "Now all we do is simply put the bag over the folded tent, turn it over and zip the bag up, a very lot easier." we will that as well.

Cheers

Stephen,

Have to correct you on one point mate. 1 bag???

I have:-
1 bag for the RV3 tent and poles.
1 bag for the ground sheet.
1 bag for the peak side panels and additional poles.

The "accessory bags" are small however and don't take up much extra room.

Love our Oztent and use it instead of the camper for overnighters, or short stay hols.

Yes I only use 1 bag. I have it all in the one main big carry bag.

I have an RV4 and concur with all the above positive statements. It's a good quality great easy up tent and has withstood some very severe gale conditions. I have owned some 'divorce tents' in the past...never again. If you are on the move continuously and have to put the tent up again and again it's the tent of choice and the only tent we now use. (my wife puts it up by herself while I unload the the rest of the gear..its that easy.)

OK..here's some of the negatives.
* You need a roof rack to carry it and if you are short, aged, or have a bad back then getting it up/down can be a problem. An RV4 or 5 is a reasonably heavy package to lift high up.
* It's not a high tent and if you very tall you may find it frustrating. I'm about 6'1" and its just Ok. I get dressed at the tall end and tend to bend over a little elsewhere.
* It's not a roomy tent either. We have 2m stretchers with alpaca dounas which allow easy getting out of bed (rather than haveing to scramble off the floor from a bag or swag). Also the stretchers allow us the extra storage room underneath for our clothing bags etc. other wise it can be quite cramped.
*With restrictive spaceing be carefull of the baby.
*If I was camping in the one spot for 2 weeks or more I would prefer a larger tent but then I would probably hire a cabin anyway.

It can be hot in WA at xmas....and tents in the hot weather are not good places to be especially with babies. i remember Many years ago with our young children in the heat in the Flinders...we didn't go camping again for 8 years after that.

Oh..a few positives not mentioned so far.
because it has an internal frame it can be used on hard rocky ground without the need to peg it down. (not in gale force wind tho').
Also the frame allows u to erect it faceing in any direction then simply pick it up (or drag it) by its sides and move it to where you want it. Very handy if the wife decides she doesn't like the view.

Hope this helps

You could consider turbo tents also. We have the 300 model and it's big enough for me, my wife our toddler, all the bags and probably will accommodate a baby-cot too! You also cand stand up inside the tent and the packed size is reasonable.

I think that the oz tents are great for touring and multi stops but if you need some space and headroom the BW wins.

Too long when packed LOL . Thats the idea , putting it on the roof rack leaves more room inside to pack other stuff LOL . If i go real quick i can have the RV4 out of the bag and put up and back inside the bag within 2 minutes . Lets see you do that with a black wolf LOL . Every tent needs pegging down LOL . You can buy many accessories for them unlike black wolf LOL . The RV4 was the best size for me . The packed size is 350mm wide whereas the RV5 packed width is 450mm . The cgear ground sheet is exactly the same width as the oztent and even the eyelets line

We went into Adelaide to buy a new tent on our last trip. Our dome tent had served us well for many years but was becoming a pain to put up & didn't take to well to the gales.
We initially went to buy one of those 30 second Oztents but opted out & bought an Oztrail tourer 9.
3 main reasons. 1, the 900$ difference in price & 2, the several kilos difference in weight & 3, the absence of any moving parts.
We only use it when we are in populated areas. Otherwise it is out under the stars or under a tarp.
Had budget & weight not been a issue I would have bought the Oztent.
We are very happy with our Oztrail though.

they also sell the OzTent range.
