Hi everyone,

We are trying to plan a trip from my home town of Parkes up to Alice Springs via Coober pedy and want to know what everyone thinks we should see on the way?

Time isn't really an issue and we want to do everything possible in case we don't get to do this trip again.

I'd recommend the half day Coober Pedy tour that runs out of the Stuart Range (think it's called) caravan park; really interesting insider knowledge of the place.

From Alice both the E and W MacDonnells are worth spending time in; and visit the Desert Park out of Alice. The Birds of Prey presentation is sensational.

What sort of vehicle are you driving ?
What time of the year ?

Painted Desert is well worth while but not when it's hot.

We will be driving a Holden Rodeo 4x4 turbo diesel and will also be towing a trailer. The trailer should be able to go pretty much anywhere.

We leave just after new years.

k3nn0 - Bad time of year to travel up the centre. Very very hot. Carry lots of water.

A very spectacular place not to be missed is the Breakaways, take the loop road when leaving Coober Pedy. But ...... it will be very hot! The Painted desert too as Kiwi Kia suggests.

You might find our blogs interesting, starting with this one. This is a series giving some of the highlights of our 2009 trip, Canberra to Alice and return through WA.

Cheers

If you have to go at that time of the year be aware that their will probably not be many other people out there on the back roads so if you do have a problem you may have to wait quite some time before you see anyone else. I definitely would not be sight seeing up there at that time of the year.

Do not miss the Breakaways. We drove from Darwin to Adelaide a dozen times and saw the sign and drove on past. This was them 2 weeks ago when we took the time to stop for the first time.

The painted desert was very good too and not too far off the track on a good road.

Beware the heat at that time of the year. I was in Coober Pedy in December and it was over 50 in the shade.

Enjoy the trip and the posting to Katherine. TheTerritory is a great place to live with lots to do.

Cheers

Hello k3nn0,

Here are a few ideas. You will probably head from Parkes to Nyngan, Cobar etc. About 30kms west of Cobar there is a road running north that takes you to Mt Grenfall Historic Site. I haven't been here but I've read that its quite interesting with some aboriginal art there. Further on you'll come to Wilcannia - which isn't as bad as people sometimes say and then Broken Hill.Broken Hill is worth spending time looking around with its art galleries and mines. Just about 25kms west is Silverton which is where they filmed one of the Mad Max Movies and its definitely a must go and see. There's an old pub, lots of art galleries etc.

From Broken Hill you could head into South Australia to Yunta and then take the Frome Downs Road up to Arkaroola or go further west and take the road up to Hawker into the Flinders Ranges where you can spend a lot of time looking around all the many attractions there. I would then detour out through Blinman to Arkaroola and stay a few nights there. There are self drive tours but the guided tour to Siller's Look Out is spectacular.

From Arkaroola you could go to Lyndhurst, Copley (where you should visit the bakery for quandong pies) and then head up to Farina to camp for the night. Next Maree and the Oodnadatta Track to William Creek or you could go on the Borefield Track across to Roxby Downs, do a detour out to visit quirky Andamooka then Woomera and on to Glendambo. I'd also suggest a detour out to spend a night at the Kingoonya Pub before heading on to Coober Pedy.

From Coober Pedy you could visit the Break Aways, do a tour, then head out to the Painted Desert and stay at Ackeringa Station before heading to Oodnadatta and then on to Eringa Station waterhole and in to Dalhousie Hot Springs for a day or two. From there you could head north to Mt Dare Station which has the best steaks I've ever eaten. Then its on to the Northern Territory and either head in to the Stuart Highway via Finke or keep going on the Old Ghan Track to Chambers Pillar and on up to Alice or you could detour out on the Old Andado Track and head to Alice Springs that way.

If you went up the Old Ghan Track to Chambers Pillar you could then cut across to the Stuart Highway on the Hugh River Stock Route then head south a bit to Lasseter Highway and on out to Uluru and Kata Tjuta. From there you could head to Kings Canyon and take the Meereenie Loop around to the West McDonnell's and on to Alice from there.

There you are...just a few options ... and you did say time was no problem.

Like the others have all said it will be very hot at that time of year. I'm sure you don't have to be told to make sure you have lots of water, to have a uhf radio and a sat phone, extra fuel, the usual spares and stocks of food etc. There won't be a lot of people travelling at that time of year as someone else also said. Let someone reliable know of your travel plans and dates so that if something does go wrong they will know where you should be.

G'day k3nnO

We did a simiular trip in July, how long have you got?
I could spend a month just doing what VivC recommended and I don't disagree with any of the places that were mentioned. You could spend a week at Broken Hill alone!
Re temperarures, Parkes average Jan maximim is 32, Aliice isn't that much hotter at 36. Depends how fit, hydrated you keep yourself and used to the heat you are.
A lot of the comments about the inland heat are written by coastal people, not used to it. White fellas have worked through the summer inland heat for 150 years. However I would not be doing it with young kids.
We found staying at Stations like Ackaringa (near painted desert), Kings Ck Station and though not a Station, Mt Dare Hotel more relaxed and enjoyable than Caravan Parks. Keep an eye out for those places.

Hey Mark,

When VivC replied to my thread i said time was not an issue BUT now work is telling me i have to get up there by the 13th of Jan. And since we are leaving Parkes on the 31st of Dec that kills our travel time. So now we have 13 Days to get from Parkes to Katherine.

So now we will have to prioritize our trip and see what would be the most interesting places only. We will also be spending 2-3 days in Alice alone to visit friends so that knocks even more days off.

So what would everyone suggest????

Camping or staying in Motels?

10 days, suggest you won't have time to see Oodnadatta & Painted Desert, Flinders, nor gorges east/west of Alice. Just spend you time at Coober Pedy, Breakaways, Uluru, Kuta Juta/ Olgas, Kings Canyon, then Alice.

In terms of pure driving (inclusing Uluru) the above can be done in 5 long days.
This gives you five days of actually doing something. 2 nights Broken Hill, 1 night Pt Augusta region, 1night & 1/2 day maybe Coober Pedy, 1 night bush, 2 nights Uluru, 2 nights Kings Canyon Station then Alice Springs 10th day?

So much to see and you only have 1/3 to 1/4 of the time required!
On you way back south next (if you don't go via Mt Isa) you can do the Mt Dare, Dalhousie-Oodnadatta-Painted Desert detour.

We are planning on doing a bit of both depending on the weather. We will have everything with us so that if we decide to stop anywhere along the way (between towns) we could camp.

We where thinking of getting to broken hill on the 31th dec to bring in the new year then maybe do a like exploring on the 1st jan. Then on to port augusta either that afternoon or on the 2nd. What is at port augusta? Coober pedy early on the 3rd then explore that afternoon and the 4th depending on whats there and how long it takes. On to maybe painted desert or straight onto uluru. Stay there 2 nights and stay at kings canyon for 1 night. Then to get to Alice maybe taking the Mereenie Loop and stopping for the hikes along the way. Stay 2-3 days in Alice then devils Marbles on the way to Katherine.

How does that sound? Anything else we should add in or take out?

Cheers.

Basically fine. You won't have time to do the Painted desert, but do the Breakaways, via the trip out along the Oodnadatta Rd, then turn off at the rabbit fence from memory.along Moon Plains Then head back to the Highway, maybe 40km total detour, well worth it.
Port Augusta though we stayed there, I can't really comment as apart from spending time at the Police Station reporting some of our gear stolen from the CP we didn't get to see much of it.
Woomera is certainly worth a 30 minute look, only a few kms off the highway and good spot for a lunch stop.
Uluru you won't be able to climb, so restricted to the cultural centre and walk around the base, worth doing with a Park Ranger. The Olgas are magnificent and well worth the 7-8km Valley of the Winds walk, so do it in the early morning. Uluru and Olgas takes up two mornings.
I would spend 2 nights at Kings Canyon, and give the various gorges in the West Mac a miss, do them another year.
Glen Helen at western edge is only 1 hour from memory out of Alice, so if you really want to see them head back in the early morning when you are in Alice.

Enjoy your time. I'm sure your plans will change half a dozen times so just go with the flow. You wan't be able to see half the things, so what you do see, try to do justice to and see them properly.

Port Augusta has the Wadlata Outback Centre that you and the kids might enjoy. I haven't been there for years but just looked it up on google so have a look and see what you think.
