Hullo All,

Well after much thought we purchased a 12 v Piranha/Versalite for $126-00 from TJM in Adelaide, and a cheaper one for $30-00 as a back up from the 12 volt Shop.

Believe it or not the cheaper one is far brighter, with replacement tubes available at most hardware stores.

Really the only difference is the warranty and a "you beaut carry bag" with the Piranha, whoopy do dar!

Sorry the $30-00 one does not have a brand name on it, after quizzing the boss he swears they have not had any trouble with them.

Cheers P&J

That is very interesting, do you know if the cheaper one consumes more power?

Could you please provide more information on the light as I would like to have a look at them

Alby,

Just goes to show (prove) that brand name isn't necessarily always best (value, performance, etc).

Tis the same old story "Pay for the name not the performance of the artical"

Good on you, but I am actually surprised.

I went the other way - spent many $$'s on cheaper ones, one after the other, until I've had it with troubles starting the light, low output and the like. Bought a Piranha and I wished I did that from the start

I am now looking at getting a second light, and it would definately be a Piranah or Versalight

My 2 Versa lights wee purchased in 1995 and are still going strong.
The only thing I have done is to get the yellow anti bug insert for them which helps in summer greatly.

I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

I also have a Piranha fluro (11 watt, 0.8 amp) as well as an Evakool Torpedo compact fluro (13 watt, 0.5 amp) both of which are excellent.
The reason why these lights are more expensive is in the inverter technology of the units which enable higher light output but low amp consumption.

See if you can measure the current draw on your cheapie. You may well put it away to conserve valuable battery capacity.

Did you buy a bracket to support your light?
There is an excellent one available for the Piranha/Versalite which fits on to a tent pole allowing the bracket to side up or down. Simple but effective.
These fluoros can also be fitted with an internal yellow filter to limit the attraction of insects but it does reduce the brightness somewhat.

Bill.

I have a versalite and on many camping trips over the years with mates who have had a variety of cheaper lights, nothing has come close to the versalite for brightness.
So I am surprised ... and somewhat intrigued by the cheaper light.

We've had two of these lights for something like 13-14 years now. A friend made up a great stand for them - acts like a street light stand. We have found them fantastic.

We always used to call it 'the very good light' - still do for that matter.
