Hi Guys,
I am in the planning process of building an off-road tandem trailer. I have managed to find an engineering company that will provide me what I require, all i need to do is have it welded together. I can't weld to save myself.
Can anyone give me an idea of what it would cost to weld up a 9 x 5 tandem, all pieces are cut to size etc and approx how long it will take. Alternatively could prob get it all tacked together then just need the final welding done.!!
Just want to know if i am still significantly saving or not.!!!!
Thanks
Bruce

Bruce, it would be helpfull if you mention your location, i.e a welder in
Perth would be too expensive to go to
Sydney. Cheers

Bruce and Sal,
Bit hard to give guesstimates without laying eyes on it, if everything is cut to size and has been done so correctly then a day should see the chassis along with spring hangers etc etc welded together no probs at all, gets a bit more fiddly when you start putting all the sheet metal in.
If it is just a basic 9x5 HD tandem trailer then i would imagine 2 days should have it close to done by a experianced welder with MIG..once you start adding all the little extras (gas bottle holders, spare wheel holders,
water tank mounts etc etc) you could add 1,2 or maybe more days, all depends on how much you are getting done.
Overall though i think 2 days should see a pro welder come close to knocking of the basics...after that how longs a piece of string.
Good luck

Thanks for all your responses.
Just did a quick comparison with a trailer already built & I don't think getting a kit i going to be very beneficail, the welding & painting would need to be very cheap to make it worth my while.
Thanks anyway appreciate the comments.!!

And if you want it to last you need to get it hot dip galvanised..

Not an issue..
Mine's 9 years old, lives 24/7 in the open, no rust. Never had/needed any maintenance on the body or chassis.

Hi Bruce,
Hubby is a boilermaker welder, ticketed...
We looked at similar, but unless you had all the different bits and pieces (toolwise), it was nowhere near economically sound to do it yourself, as you said.
If you were in a workshop and could get your hands on everything you needed, all good.
Hope that helps.
