Hi,

well we are well underway and loving our trip so far.
But I have some questions regarding a step in our trip I had planned in my mind but am questioning now Ive towed the trailer a little while.
I Wanted to go from Bega to Wagga Wagga via the Snowy Mountains Highway. Just wanted to know how hard this would be given our tow vehicle and trailer.

Have a 96 2.8 Diesel Hilux pulling a Campertrailer that is around 900kg. Hills are slow, going about 40kms or less on some. Also sustained heavy work seems to sit the oil pressure a bit above 3/4, tempreture is fine.

Is this drive going to be all heavy lifting? or just some sections? Not too worried about speed, but 400kms underload worries be a bit
just after some adive
Thanks all.
Wes

Haven't been there for a few years now, but you do have one particularly steep climb from Bemboka (great pie shop there) up to the top of the range outside Nimmitabel. In just a few k's you climb from about 460 mtrs up to just under 1100 mtrs. Nothing wrong with the road itself, just a big climb. The rest of the road betwwen Nimmitable and Wagga is a piece of cake in comparison.

A lot of people tow up those ranges, so you should be OK. Just take a break when you need to. A couple of the U turn bends on the climb won't let you go faster than about 25-30 km/hr anyway. Have a cuppa to celebrate when you get to the top of the range.

Did the same drive last year in the reverse towing a non braked camper trailer and had no problems. Like Wesley said only one steep short climb and one short decent, the rest was flat once up on the range. Was towing using a new D4D Hilux but you have any worries. Nice drive as well with some interesting scenery.

- it is steep in some sections - but no more than say clyde mountain ( from braidwood to batemans bay ) may be a bit slow but you should be fine as the trailer is not really that heavy - as the other poster has said -- once your past brown mountain - its pretty easy going -- just remember to look out for motorcycles - AND specially keep a SHARP eye out for roo's - as most of the way is 100KMH , a kangeroo strike will cause damage - and if you see one kangeroo , there will be another right behind it --- dont presume it will stay put on the side of the road....

Whilst the trip from Bega to Wagga is fairly easy and the road is in pretty good nick, there are some quite steep assents and descents to be covered.

As long as you aren't in a hurry, the hilux will be able to cope with the trip no worries at all.

The steepest & longest will be the climb up brown mountain for sure.

There is another bit of a climb between Adaminaby & Kiandra...a few 35km/h bends etc...

Then there is a basically flat section to Rules point & a little climb there but there is an overtaking lane there too so you won't be pushed.

Talbingo mountain will be the next challenge but downhill, choose the right gear & you won't need your brakes...(unless you get caught by a truck in low gear & even in 1st your auto is still way to fast like mine was one day!)

From Talbingo there is really only 1 little hill before you drop down into Tumut.

I refer to little hills as hills that my Prado 3L Diesel requires full throttle to maintain 90km/h over BTW.

The freeway is fine, Wagga hill being the steepest it is where the Wagga turnoff is. Prado can do 110km/h up over here empty but thats about it.

Enjoy the drive!

PS Roos are worst around dusk but especially between Talbingo & Tumut along the edge of the dam.
