Noticed today in Sydney's southern suburbs that the difference in price between diesel and unleaded petrol (E10) in most stations was 15 cents, this is bloody ridiculous, makes me think seriously about buying a petrol powered vehicle next time around which is soon.

I often wonder if some people don't realy care about the price of Petrol, Last week in Mandurah WA, the BP service station which is 100metres down the road from the Caltex (Woolworths) was 20 cents (yes 20 cents) a ltr dearer and yet the bowers had cars at every one filling up.................and I have seen this happen quite a lot over the years.......

Many have fuel cards & don't pay the billboard price anyway or are company cards & don't pay the bills at all :-)

I will probably buy a petrol before Christmas Rob.
Gonna get a cab chassis hilux auto petrol.
Had enough of overpriced fuel, smelly hands at the servo, noisy motors & high service costs coupled with gutless performance.
$2000 cheaper to buy a petrol than a diesel as well & shows the same redbook depreciation as the diesel manual over the last 3 years.
Up this way (NQ) most people swear by diesel. Don't know why. Just a truck thing I guess.

Agree with what you say Peter, I'm looking at a HiLux V6 extra cab to tow a small van as opposed to the Land Cruiser 75 series I have now with a slide on. Diesel $1.28 a litre in Sydney, E10 unleaded $1.12.

Just remember with e10 it often works out more expensive because fuel economy goes down as well on most efi motors.

Yes but prior to that diesel was a cheaper than Petrol for quite a while so it's cyclical , swings and roundabouts so to speak. Ther price of petrol and diesel plays a big part when doing long term comparisons of say a landcruiser petrol V8 vs the V8 diesel, it has often been said that it takes around 250,000kms before the Diesel gets in front of the Petrol given the $10k price hike etc etc, I'm sure that ratio changes all the time. There is no reason Diesel should be as expensive as it is, other than taxes and politics..!

Diesel in Perth and in the country areas has always been considerably more expensive then unleaded. One only has to go to the fuelwatch website to see the huge discrepancies in the price of diesel and petrol:

not always so I frequently see diesal within 5c and often the same price and sometimes cheaper than unleaded in Perth
- it depends where ULP is in the price cycle as diesal remains static

outside of perth prices for ulp and diesal are generally the same give or take a c or 2

I dont always pay attention to the unleaded/diesel price as my 4x4 runs on Direct injection LPG , so am always on the lookout for the cheapest LPG where ever I happen to be, but intersting to know that there are times when diesel and unleaded are on a par - just that I`m not that obersvant for the reasons stated. But thanks for the info.

I found it a bit funny that the diesel price seems to have become dearer than petrol in line with more of the car manufacturers making diesel powered cars (like Ford Focus etc).

At the moment I think we have the best of both worlds, a diesel fourby and a small cheap petrol car for the missus (me) to drive around.

The petrol company's wouldn't put the price of diesel up just because there are more and more diesel powered vehicles on the road...... would they ?

In the past few weeks Sydney prices have averaged 122 for diesel whilst petrol has sung from 112c to 132c. I've been having the same thoughts myself about going back to petrol but when towing I'd be re-fuelling far more often and don't like carrying much petrol in jerries. So, will probably stay with diesel when I put my magnificient Defender up for $20,000 ;-)) and go bacik to another Disco.

You also have to take into account that diesel's will be up to 30% more economical.
