Hi Tukka,

Do you want to know about Wyndham? if so, we have been - not huge amount there, although there is a great lookout when the tide is in. I believe the pub is pretty good and there is the croc farm.

Cheers

Matt & Caz H

I know quite alot about wyndham, done many trips up there, i was just amazed there was nothing at all about wyndham in the "description" about the kimberleys.

It seems to be all about Kununurra stealing all the tourism thunder and they dont actually have much there at all, just more shops thats about it.

Regards

It gets a mention in the "Places" section. If you know the town you could add your info there.

Cheers,

theres only a quite sizable national park with a fair bit to see right on the outskirts of kunnunurra as well as a huge lake to go swimming in as well as kyaking towards lake argyle. not to mention the dam and the crossing etc etc
perhaps try dragging yourself away from the shops there and youl see a bit

sorry that was more directed at Tukka claiming nothing at Kunnunurra except shops.

I was wondering how he came to that conclusion I found more than enough intesting stuff within 5km of the town - certainly more than most towns

Hi again,

We have lived in Kununurra since July and I agree there is not a lot here either, even some of the shops have closed down since we have been here, I worked here in the CP and a lot of people/tourist's enquired about Wyndham so a lot of people do venture up for the day. I do believe that the Wyndham baker (world famous pies) sold up and is now making pies for the local shop here in Kununurra (they are really good pies!!!!).

Cheers

Howdy

Your not wrong about the Wyndham pies.

They used to be famous. When visiting in Broome you even hear the locals there talking about them

cheers

I 've been there too, Wyndham is like Broome, look an leave, not a lot in town, it's all out from town, use it as a base to get some food and fuel.
My opinion of Wyndham (and Derby too) is not high at all, keep everything close to you and tied down too.

Easy tiger. No crime in Wyndham i think you mean Kununurra. Wyndham boasts the best barra fishing in the world, the best mud crabs and the biggest crocodiles. Also more history then Kununurra. World famous Bird watching, world famous Lookout and Hangliding venue. so much to see and do there i love it how visitors knock it cause then we who are in the know get to enjoy it to ourselves. Where else can you safely swim with salties while barra swim around ya? If its fishing or camping your after its the mecca of Northern Australia. Except people just tend to relate everything around the joint to kununurra, the Gibb Road is always just out of Kununurra yet its closer to Wyndham and is part of Wyndham history. The movie Australia was actually filmed closer to Wyndham then Kununurra, yet they claim that. But nothing is ever mentioned of the crime rate in Kununurra. Or the fact that it falls in the shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley(they dont like that).

Kroozer,
no, I do mean Wyndham, have also been to Kununurra a few times too.

All these things you suggest Wyndham "boasts" are not actually there in the town itself, but they are in the surrounding areas, which is part of the vast Kimberley experience.

Mainey, i lived for 23 years in Wyndham. Never ever locked my car at night or when at the shops, never locked the house when at work or down the street, never had a problem in 23 years. Dont know where your information comes from. As a kid never had any trouble out at night, try that in any of the other Kimberley towns and i know which town will come out best.

And as for what the town boasts, you can spot crocs and catch crabs and barra 50 metres from the Pub mate, how much closer to town can ya get. (For that matter even from the Community Club)All the history is in the Port area, its actually all Heritage listed, the Bastion(5 Rivers Lookout) couldnt get any closer to town i would think, nestled between town and the port and over looking both.

As Tukker said, Kununurra claims places that have to be reached by airplane, can see these places from any Kimberley town by airplane. And if you have ever been by boat into Wyndham you will never ever forget the scenery and rugged landscape. Absolutley out of this world. Every skipper that brings his vessel in to the port is absolutely amazed at the scenery. Sit and watch waterfalls in the wet from ya verandah, falling from the Cockburn ranges and adjacent to the Bastion.

Crime isnt a problem in Wyndham, i bet its safer for kids to walk the street there at night then were you live. The only time there is crime in Wyndham is when the neighbouring communities come in for a funeral or royalties. And they are not locals.

"The only time there is crime in Wyndham is when the neighbouring communities come in for a funeral or royalties. And they are not locals"

I can only assume *these same people* also come into town each dole day, which happens each fortnight, same as it happens in Broome too.

If they are "locals", or from the local communities is not relevant, they were in your town when I saw them.

Why can't I state an opinion here without it being said it's wrong, after all it's my opinion, not everyones but it is mine.

The only time I've ever had anything stolen from my vehicle was in Darwin, but I don't think badly of Darwin :)

At home here in Busselton (WA) I leave the boat out the front, has the anchor and motor still attached each morning - so far :)

Mainey, This is only my opinion, but I love Broome and would and have walked around town late at night without a problem. Busselton is deserted during winter and has every man and his dog there in summer. The place does nothing for me.
You obviously like it and fair enough, but don't drop the boot into other towns at every opportunity just because you don't like them.

Mark, I can respect your opinion, I'm one of the dogs that get up that way in winter.
I do it cause I like the warmer weather, but I don't stay in Broome too long as the place does nothing for me.

Very interesting feed back guys

When i said Kununurra has nothing much but shops that didnt mean to say thats all i seen!! But what is there to see in kununurra beside Ivanhoe crossing and the Dam??

All im saying is that nothing is mentioned about Wyndham when it has more Tourist attractions closer to it than Kununurra has

When you see the tourism ad's on about kununurra they claim stuff as far away as the Bungles??? Far out. You dont see poor old halls creek getting a mention on the Tv about the Bungles. I even seen an ad the other night saying come to Kununurra and see Mitchell PLateau. What a joke that is

I spent a fair bit of time in both towns working, when in full swing tourist season all the Kununurra locals dont tell the tourist to go over to Wyndham to see all the beautiful places, they tell them "its just a dusty dump, dont waste your time". Then the Tourists that used to venture over and actually have a look around the place and not just through an airconditioned window end up loving the joint. Very suprising how many of them actually used to stay longer than plannedImage Could Not Be Found

The billabong out of Wyndham was the highlight of my recent trip. Some photos on the blog.

Had a great Friday night at the Country Club. The locals were the friendliest I found anywhere.

Would like to get back there again.

Wyndham is a must see town.

It has certainly declined in the years between 1994 and 2008.

There used to be quite a bit going on. Almost a resort feel. It had the best fish and chips in the world -$7 for a big piece of barra and chips.

You can still get barra and chips at the pub (the photos in the bar are very interesting).

I don't know if I'd want to live there though.

Yeah has definitely died in the ass, all government agencies were moved over to Kununurra. Trying to shut down the hospital and High School also. But if Kununurra wants to keep going it wont survive without the Wyndham Port. Set for a huge boost too soon with the opening of a new Iron Ore mine and with the return of the Coppernicus mine, plus Ord stage 2. None of that can happen without Wyndham, never mind being the backbone for livestock export around the North Kimberley and East Territory.

Doesnt matter though, take the good times with the bad times. One thing is for sure she gets bloody hot in the build up there.

Not to mention diesel was 20c per litre cheaper there than Kunnunurra. Not a bad drive to the prison tree and the Karunjie track to the Pentecost river crossing with spectacular views of the cockburn ranges. I wanted to stay a night there but was outvoted so we moved on. i reckon the fishing would have been awsome to match! The Lookout is worth the drive in itself.

Did the Kimberley last year and stayed in Wyndham overnight. Well worth a visit. Stayed in caravan park to freshen up before the Gibb. Good fish n chips at caravan park. Good drive from Kununurra to Wyndham via Ivanhoe crossing / parrys lagoon rd. Be sure to have a beer at five rivers lookout at dusk ! Mum, Dad 2 daughters aged 9 & 11 and camper. Will take a lot to top the Kimberley. check out Ron & Viv Moons book, The Kimberley an adventurers guide.

Is it something to do with Exploreoz.com.au.
