Hello All,
I was wondering if anyone could give an opinion on a deep cycle battery, and whether it is good value for money? The brand is ULTIMATE Deep Cycle Battery N70AGM. It is 12 volt 100 AH. It is available at Battery World, and I was quoted $385 today, which is about $50 off so-called RRP. Does this sound fair? Don't want to spend more than I have too.
Going
camping at Christmas to Lake
Somerset. Just going to be running the 80 ltr fridge/freezer and a light or two at night. Maybe the laptop for about an hour. So the size should be more than adequate, I think.
Hope someone has some knowledge of these and can give me an opinion.
Thanks,
Carol

I would thing for that money you could almost afford an Absorbed Glass Matt battery. I switched from standard deep cycle batteries to AGMs about 18 months ago because when you try to charge a deep cycle, they take ages. You can have a alternator/charger putting out 40 amps and the battery will only accept 12 or so whereas an AGM will take the higher current. The result - the AGM charges quicker and you can run your generator less.
The brands "Fullriver" and "Remco" seem to have good names when it comes to AGM batteries.

Hi Rod,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, the battery is indeed an AGM. Didn't know that it charged up quicker though, that's a bonus. Where do you go to buy Fullriver or Remco - I have really only come across the
well-knowns ( to me) like Century.
Regards,
Carol

If you are in
Brisbane you can also try "Springers".

Hi Carol,
Sounds a little expensive to me.
Whitworths Marine sell a Remco brand 100 A/h AGM deep cycle battery for $339. This price has been stable and fixed for a long time.

Carol,
Just had another thought.
If you are borrowing a generator, make sure you also have a battery charger.
Do not attempt to charge the battery direct from the gennie's 12 volt outlet or you run the risk of destroying your new and expensive battery.
Bill.

Hello Sand Man,
Thank you for your reply. I only
camp and do not have a boat. Is there a Whitworths Marine here in
Brisbane area? Is it like BCF?
Should be ok with the charging. Have bought already a
battery power box from BCF an ARC POWERPACK which has a built in charger. This fits up to 100 AH battery.
Should be ok, I hope.
Regards
Carol

Carol,
Those ARK Powerpacks have a 1500mAhr charger in them from the
brochure. Whilst this may be ok for "at home" charging, field charging with a generator would be lengthy to return the day's usage.
I'm not sure if you were aware of this issue (we looked at one the other week and noticed this problem for us).
Hope that helps
Andrew

You should be able to buy a Fullriver 115Ahr AGM DC series for about $330 on ebay. That would be my choice.

Hi Peter, yes I have been having a good look on eBay, but have really only found 2 stores that would be big enough for me to trust. And yes, they do have similar prices to that, but you then have to consider delivery costs, which brings it up to somewhere near my Battery World price. Frustrating. Do you have a specific place in mind?
Regards
Carol

Batt Meister,
A little tip. If you want to advertise on websites you have to pay.
The advertising rates here are more than reasonable, and this website has enormous impact.
You've been trying to free advertise here for ages. Of course your posts will get deleted. Spend a few dollars and you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results.
Jim.

Hi Guys,
Thank you to those who answered my call for help. I would just like to let you know that I appreciated all your combined advice.
To let you know the outcome.
I have decided to purchase a battery from Delta Wholesale Batteries in Sumner
Park Qld. Very helpful guy there offered me what I think is a good deal.
TURBO brand AGM 120 AH for $363, the extra amp hours should come in handy and I can pick up. He also said he could do it cheaper if I didn't use a card.
Sounds like a deal maker to me!!
So thanks again for your help.
Best Regards,
Carol

Where will the battery be located and how will it be charged?
Any fridge over 60L tends to be very hard on
battery power consumption.
