Hi All,
I have asked this question before and got some great ideas and have since been to the suggested spots.
So here goes again.
We are looking at going
camping over xmas prob for week from 26th on. This is what i have:
Fully self sufficient i.e
toilet etc,
Pathfinder 4wd No
snorkel or lift etc, wife is not keen to do much 4wding she is worried we will kill the car as it's the fam car she doesn't want to be left with no car. And I will be towing a trailer most likely be a 6 x 4 but possible a tandem, depends if we take our bikes etc.
Possible might have a second 4wd with us and a camper trailer. It will have winch & full recovery gear, my brother & fiance.
Water is a must river or beach.
Open to ideas in VIC, NSW or SA, never camped outside Vic so something new would be good.
As quiet as possible (i know this will be hard over this period) will have 2
young kids with us 5 and 2.5yrs
Thanks in advance the last suggestions from this great
forum were fantastic. Hope that's enough info
Bruce

I suppose you have looked at the parks victoria web site? Have you been to Sheepyard flat or Fry's flat on the Howqua River. Great place to set up
camp & numerous day trips to
Craig's Hut, Mount Buller, Jamieson etc...it's about 40 km out of
Mansfield on the Buller Road, past Merrijig Pub turn right onto Howqua Track (Which is a dirt road) follow into Howqua Hills Historic area. The Barmah Forest on the Murray is another good spot. Both areas are about 3 hours from Melb.
Nelson down on the coast is very pretty but it's a good drive right on the Vic S.A border.
Glenelg River & the Ocean veruy nice spot & good Caravan Parks too.

Hi,
No never been to sheepyard etc. Will avoid the Murray till later in Jan then will go up skiing then.!!
Just ordered a map for Howqua, but thought it would be a very popular area, so not sure how many
camp sites are in the area.
Bruce
Will look into
Nelson also..Thanks

Hi Bruce n Sal,
again up on the Howqua is 8 Mile flat, not as big an area as Sheepyard flat and a bit further in, but truely a beautiful part of Victoria. Fire pits supplied T.Y.O wood.

If you want to travel up to NSW, a place called Bendethra is a top spot. A bit of light 4WD'ing, if towing may use low range bton save the brakes going in.

Hi Tony,
I managed to find it I had misspelt it.!!! From what I can see on Google maps looks like quite a large area, How close can you
camp to the river.??
I assume phones don't work either, suppose i better get that UHF for xmas. :)
Thanks

You can
camp within 30-40 meters of the river, some
places even closer. No phone service in the valley.

Hi Tony,
Is this spot ridiculously busy at that time of year. Do we need to get there before xmas or should we be ok to find a spot if we decide to go up there.
Thanks

As with a lot of
camping spots over Xmas, it will be busy. The sooner you get to the valley the better choice of
camp spots you will have.
Being quite large you can always find somewhere to set up
camp near
water.

Hi Tony,
Is this area one that is monitored by a
ranger. We went away to
Talbotville over the Melb Cup weekend and it had a
ranger drive around at least once a day.
Never had that before while
camping is this common practice good to know they are checking on
camp sites etc.

Try
Princess Margaret Rose caves, on the
Glenelg River. No 4wding, but proximity to beach, estuary, cities (
Portland & Mt Gambier), caves, parks, etc,. Never hot down there over summer.

Take the road from Jamieson to
Woods Point, and within 10km of Jamieson there are several
camping areas on the Upper Golbourn River. Can
camp behind the Kevington Pub too,

Wherever you go, plan to BE there at sparrow’s or else you will have difficulties in getting a spot big enough to take 2 camps.
I know from bitter experience the difficulty in finding a suitable
camp site for one small tent in this area on Boxing Day.
All the
camping areas that front the river will be full (some by Xmas Eve), but there is one a few km north of
Woods Point that doesn’t have river frontage that remains less crowded (sorry, I can’t remember the name)

Thanks Nargum,
I figured as much. We prob wont be able to leave till boxing day at the absolute earliest. Trying to find somewhere not as common to try and limit the crowd, but not know many spots makes it hard and anything listed anywhere is pretty much guaranteed to be full.
Thanks for the replies we might just have to suck it a see once we decide where we r going.
