Hi all, I'm heading to Broome for Xmas/New Year, and have never been there before. Just wondering if anyone out there knows of any nice day trip destinations from Broome.
I know it is the wet season up there, but just how wet should we expect it.
I have a '06 100 series TD and our travelling friends are in a 07 TD Patrol (yep got the recovery gear for the Nissan, sorry!)
We want to go a bit bush and explore depending on road conditions.
I've got some Hema NW paper maps and also have a Garmin Nuvi 255W. Will the garmin be any good to me up there or should I purchase the Gamin topo map I have heard about ?

Cheers
Glenn

I have only been there once and that was in the dry. But I did see lots of warnings about road closures in the wet. There is a sign at the start of the Gibb River Road that lists all the roads conditions along that road. I have heard that they can all be closed in the wet. I also believe the road to the Bungles is closed. Not sure about Cap Leveque though. That may be open.

Is it possible to change plans and either go another time of year or to pick a non tropical destination.

The weather is going to be the killer. If you are not accustomed to 100% humidity at 100 degrees don't go.

Sorry mate but this is what we were told. And after thinking back to both my younger years in the Army in northern Australia and time spent in Vietnam in the same weather I believed and took the advice and we went in June.

Yeah, I've been looking at the averages for that time of year, but it's come down to available time off that our friends who live and work in Karratha have.
They wont be worried about the heat and Ive just been working in Singapore for the last year. It's the cheese and kisses who hails from the land of the long white cloud that will feel the climate, may need a stick to get her out of the air-con.

Go for it Glen.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
What would we have to tell our grandchildren if we only ever went to the theme parks on the Gold Coast when the temps were right.

Glenn,

I agree with Fatso, Go for it!

But while your going for it - keep an eye on the BOM Tropical Cyclone site - Cyclone Billy was passing by Broome last December and disrupted Xmas and New Years plans.

Have fun.

December isn't a rain month in Broome. Average rainfall is 54mm

Heat however is something else with 42°C + expected most days and the average minimum around 26°C

Probably not a good idea to go bush at this time of year. Stick to the coastal fringe instead. Camping will not be pleasant so the best bet is to head for an airconditioned motel

Cheers

For day trips there is only really the road up to Willie Creek/Barred Creek/James Price Point/Quondong/Point Coulomb. By Xmas though it could be closed as the tracks get very messy here real quick. The rain doesnt tend to seep into the pindan but just sit on top and it becomes really slippery. And is a bugger to clean off to. We have only had the one storm here so far though, but it will only take a couple of good donwpours to turn things ugly, and then the shire closes the road. There isnt much proper 4wding around here thats for sure, its all very easy going just bad corrugations.

I left some of that pindan mud on a new car once for a couple of weeks and when I removed it the duco came off too! Scary stuff!! .....LOL

I have not spent a summer in Broome. September was hot enouigh for me!!...lol

We passed through Broome in July this year. Apart from some new developments the old Broome was still there. I was shocked to see that where we used to access Cable Beach with the 4by was now sporting a green lawn...LOL. Thats progress, eh?

Hey Willem, yeah the old pindan is a real nightmare.

And as for the temps mate, lived in the Kimberley for my whole 26 years and i tell ya the build up to the wet doesnt get any easier to handle as these years go on. But come January when the rain starts ya forget all about it till October. Thank christ for AIRCONDITIONING.

And that grass at Cable Beach is actually what they now call the Outdoor Ampitheatre, hows that for progress.

Hope ya didnt look at the price of housing while you were here? If the heat, mozzies, sandflies, stingers, sharks, or crocs dont kill ya the price of living here will. LOL

Ah. yer only a babe in the woods, Kroozer...:-)

We spent some time in Broome in 1984. I got to know Lord McAlpine quite well. Nice bloke. Did some work for him. Met up with a whole lot of local characters and became involved in the setting up of the Broome Tourist Booklet. A 'local' mate of mine cooked a turtle on the beach for us one night. Good tucker. Another fella was building a rammed earth house. Loved Broome, and we might have stayed, but life went off in a different direction and we moved on. Found that after the age of 50 living in the Tropics became a challenge. Ended up in the deep south but now I yearn for the tropics again....LOL

Yeah the price of housing is extreme. Better to hide under a lean-to on the beach somewhere :-)

Cheers
