Has anyone camped at Davies plain hut or down the bottom of Kings plain over xmas before?
I want to take the kids (3 and 7yo) out for a camp the week between xmas and new year and just wanted to get an idea of how busy it gets....I know I'm not going to get a camp to myself, but there's a big difference between a couple of other groups and 'tent city' if u know what i mean

Or, can you suggest anywhere around Vic high country or Snowy Mountains, or even south coast that will be not 'too' busy over that week? (or am i dreaming?)

Thanks

If your setup to camp anywhere...then you will have plenty of space on the plains....

Just get there with plenty of time, have a look around at your options & then decide....

If you follow the track south from Davies plain Hut, toward Kings Plain Track there are plenty of flatter sections although pitching a tent might be an issue with the snow grass...

Are you aware of what The Kings Track is like?

Steep, Rocky, Eroded, Bulldust sections....plenty of erosion humps (on the steep bits too).....

Its one of the best 4WD tracks of the high plains.....

If it rained overnight, you may have issues climbing out in the morning....

I'm assuming your going with another vehicle?

It can be a bit of a slog to get in and out. As StormyKnight says, if it rains you could be in a bit of bother if you are pressed for time. I was last up that way in April this year, and the track was in the best condition I've seen it for a long time. The last drop-off to the bottom used to be covered in fist-sized rocks, but this year it was very smooth. This section would be very different if it rained for a couple of days:-)

We've always camped to the left of the main track, right down on the river as far as you can go. There are other camp sites to the right of the track, and one such camp-site is actually on the other side of the river across a good solid crossing. Expect a bit of "bush pin striping" on your vehicle if you go to that site.

Not sure how busy it will be over Christmas. We've only rarely seen other people down that way, probably because it is one way only, and therefore there is none of the through traffic you'd expect to see up top on the Davies Plain track.

Enjoy your trip!

Come any closer and I'll rip your throat out!

Thanks guys, great to hear from people who've been in there before!

I have an 80 series landcruiser with lift, muddies and winch and penty of pin striping (although standard FSD - full slip diff). If it started to rain I'd planned on bugging out pretty quickly as I'll probably be going by myself (although at xmas time your rarely ever by yourself ;-)

Can anyone give advice on Walhalla (Vic) or surrounds over that xmas/ny time.... I would have thought it'd get packed out in a big way?

Not a lot of room but good camping down on the river at Kings Track. Got snowed on there one year, but with chains on had no trouble getting out. Chains are worth carrying in the high country at all times.

Hi NUTS,

My family (three vehicles in total) camped on the river at Kings plain over Christmas a few years ago. We had the place to ourselves, and did not pass anyone else on the way in or the way out.

I agree with the above comments about the track down to Kings plain being rough.

Sounds great, thanks Leanne.

How would you rate this spot for kid friendliness?

We'll only be there a couple of days, but was hoping river is slow enough to swim in and not hammering rapids.

Hi Nuts,

We had my 3yo niece camping with us at the time, and we had 6 adults keeping an eye on her (and keeping her entertained). There are the obvious concerns about camping with young children near a river - never take your eyes off them.

It is nice to camp beside a river, but if your kids can't swim very well, or are prone to wandering off, I would be very wary.

I guess the best thing to do would be to have a look at it for yourself, and if the river is flowing too fast for your liking, or you don't think it would be the best spot to camp with your children, you could always go back to Davies Plain and camp there.

Tom Groggin and Geehi would definitely be 'tent city' over Christmas. We were there on Boxing Day last year, but managed to get a small spot by ourselves.

Cheers
Leanne

Thanks Leanne.
At this stage It'll probably be just me and my 2 kids (3yo, 7yo), so I think I might base camp back up on Davies plain and just do a couple of drives out from there. I hate the feeling of not being able to watch the kids at all times.

Thanks again for the feedback :-)
