Places to fish?Fishing Jobs?Need a deckie along the west coast

Hello all.

At the moment Im in Broome and heading down the west coast. My trip is based on fishing.I'll be heading all around the coast back up to nsw.

I am stuck to land based(as i have no boat) and was wondering if there are any hot spots along the way(im not after any secret spots) just a push in the right direction.

If any one needs a Deckie for a day or some one to chip in for fuel im more than keen.

Also more importantly i would like to get some work on a fishing boat, are there many companies along the west coast?

cheers for the help

the best bet to get work on a boat is find where the fishos drink and ask around you will soon find out if there is a job going. cheers

I have a boat and if someone out the blue asked me on the street I'd probably say no, but if you'd be waitng down the boat ramp and I had room I'd more then likely say yes and if you saw me struggling to get the boat on the trailer and decided to give me a hand, I'd then have to take you out next time I went. And if you bought some beer for the trip it be all the better.

I think you'll find that to get on a trawler it's best to go down to wharf/docks also find the seafood suppliers and ask them for some contact numbers.

When you get to Geralton go to the warf, on the left side are the offices of three fishing companies, I went and had a ball, not as a paid hand but just as a 'spectator' also went out on Cray boats in Port Gregory about 200 Klms north.

I Live in Geraldton there are no trawlers working on the west coast at the moment all seasons are closed. The Abrolhos scollops are rumoured from my spys they might start in February but that is full on work long hour standing schucking shell and you could be at sea for up to 3 weeks. The prawns in Carnarvon late March again 3 weeks at sea Exmouth /Onslow middle of April.
The Cray boats are as of this week only working Monday to Thursday usually 0400 am till 1300 picking the right boat tucker deckies are welcome as stated couple of beers for the boyes on the way in is appreciated. As stated by mainey
( well known name in gero as it was Chris Mainwarings home town) go to the fishermans wharf either ask at the Geraldton fishermans Coop for the radio room and "Duck" should be able to get you a ride or Baileys fuel they both know whose who and what is happening. It depends when you will be through January is closed the Abrlohos starts in March which halves the fleet from Gero port

Off the wharf at Broome, in the channels as the tide goes out at Broome, off the beach at Barn Hill / 80 mile beach, the channel heading out of the harbour at Pt Hedland, off the rocks out the front of Pt Samson ,in the harbour at Pt Samson (I got a 70cm Barra on a lure there at night), (actually anywhere off the rocks around Samson, Wickham, Karratha, Dampier, the Burrup).
That should nudge you in the right direction....
Have fun!!!

We stopped at Barn Hill back in August and went down to Port Smith for a day trip. It looked good and then after wards I was talking to 3 separate groups who were VERY enthusiastic about this spot. Better with a boat but equally as good land based. Stop at the caravan park and they will assist as well.
Earlier I got a nice threadfin off Eighty Mile Beach but lots of competition.

Hi Pony181
The West Coast in SA has great fishing, with many great spots not requiring a boat. When you get over this way, just ask the locals and they will point you in the right direction. One good spot that is a very good local spot is Point Sinclair off of the jetty. When you get to Penong, head south on the good dirt road sign posted to Cactus Beach and Point Sinclair. Also another local spot well before Penong, is Dog Fence Beach, in the Wahgunyah Conservation Reserve.

These are just two of many fine fishing spot over on the West Coast.

Cheers and Happy Fishing

Was at Cape Peron last August - lots of yellow fin whiting in the shallows around dusk - heaps of them after dark when I checked with a big waterproof torch - was getting very windy though and rain was due so we scooted out of the park first thing next morning. Had we stayed, I was looking forward to some very good feeds of that smaller but delicious fish !
