Vic High Country This Weekend

Hi All,
I am currently in Vic on my trip around Australia. Am planning to head up to the VHC this weekend. Planning on going in through Mansfield and pretty much following the trek notes from here EO VHC Trek Notes

We are going to skip the north from Dargo bit and just head out down through the Avon River country to Coongulla(have use of a house there).

We are planning to leave here(Foster) Friday am and are planning coongulla monday pm. Single car my 80(lifted, locked, winch, td, heaps of fuel and recovery gear).

Anything we shouldnt miss or should look out for? Anyone up that way this weekend?

Thanks Guys

Matt

Plenty of camping spots within cooee of Coongulla. Huggetts Crossing is a beauty or have a look above Licola on the Wellington River. You'll be right in the heart of as much 4WDing as you can handle from easy to difficult and everything in between. The drive to Golden Point Hut is right on your doorstep at Coongulla.

We had a bout 30mm of rain through some parts of the mountains today so rivers might be up a little but should be ok. Will settle the dust at least.

Have a great time.

The bogans have all but destroyed Huggetts, it is 2 wheel drive access now.

If you end up at Huggetts, it is a good drive to Coongulla, along the Lower Block Track (lots of river crossings) & then the Avon Track to Smoking Point, then you can either use Miller's Road, or Chomley's Track to Geoghegans Road to Hodges Road, which brings you out in the middle of Coongulla on Ryans Road..

From Dargo area you can go up Billy Goats Bluff Track & then keep right to Moroka Junction, turn left (good camp at Horseyard Flat or a couple of good spots in Kellys Lane) keep driving along the Tamboritha Road to the B1Track to the Chromite Mine, then take the Chromite Mine Track to Mount Margaret Track then turn right for a short distance on Dolodrook Track which will take you to Chomley's Track near Smoking Point, turn right & follow as above.

Nice trip suggestions Shaker. It's been a couple of years since I've been to Huggetts so it's sad to hear that it isn't what it used to be. I liked your mention of Kelly's Lane. That's a beaut quiet spot away from the sometimes busy Bennison's Plain Road. Some good trout fishing had there in the past.

Matt grab yourself a couple of Rooftop maps of the area which will show you the majority of good camps along your route together with where the lookouts & historical sites are.
Walk down to the river at Tunnel Bend.
Take the 50m walk up to Picture Point. (It's easy to drive past)
Walk into the Good Hope gold battery's near Talbotville & the mines around Grant.
Rather than heading out of Wonnangatta via Cynthia Range, if you had time you could head up Hart spur, accross to Mt Murray, Twins Jeep Track & take in Blue Rag, one of the best High Country views in Vic.

Cheers Craig..................

Thanks Craig,

Bought 2 rooftop maps today. Bush huts around Mansfield and Bush Huts and Mine Relics Walhalla - Jamieson.

Thanks for the tip on Hart Spur
