Hi All,

Need some advice on batteries. I am looking at getting a new deep cycle battery. I have been told I need a 100 to 120amp/hr battery. I am currently only running a 60ltr Engel, but will prob get some lights too.

I will be buying a 120watt folding solar panel also and have the geni and a new 3 stage charger as backup.

What brand of battery should i get, after reading alot i will get an AGM. Where is the best place in Melb to get one at a reasonable price.?

Has anyone purchased batteries off ebay.?
Thanks

Bruce & Salli

Spose there are heaps of brands avalable...we have a LIFELINE brand (made in USA)..has performed very well..even with a couple of accidental shorts.
Off ebay ?? Could be the go but freight would be a killer !!

Mandrake,
your a paid up business member according to what I can read
" Business Member: Mandrake's Solar Power "

Other guys blatantly advertise here, so when someone asks for advise or a product where you can make a quid, I see no hassle in dropping the odd (direct) hint that will give them at least a starting place to get the advise or product they need.

IMO if you can't assist members in some way then I believe it's unfortunate you have to pay extra for no direct advantage to yourself :-(

(just my personal thoughts - not seeking to change regulations)

Steve,

I've been a business member for some time and sought clarity from David and Michelle about the do's and don'ts. As a BM you are entitled to answer posts about the type product you sell and that includes discussing your own product.

You are not permitted to start threads about your product. Neither are you permitted to make unrelated responses eg Someone puts up a thread suggesting they are looking to buy a Patrol and I jump in saying "What you need is a set of drawers for your Patrol".

If in doubt, shoot D or M an email for clarity.

Jim.

Jim,

It is a fine line and you walk it well.

In any case, I think that the recommendations of happy customers on the forum is far more powerful than any attempt at self promotion. Do the right thing by people in your business dealings, and the recommendations will follow.

Mainey, that I believe is the direct advantage of being an advertiser on this site. The ones who do the right thing don't have to point people at their products or services, others on the forum will do it for them. We see it often.

Cheers,

Matt.

I have been using Fullriver AGMs for 5 years.
There are HCL and DC types. HCL have high cranc capacity and good deep cycle ability. DC is better deep cycle.
You should be able to get 115Ahr for about $330.

I think they have gone up substantially. I believe a number of the well known stockists don't carry them any more because they have priced themselves out of the market. From the "Fridge & Solar" website :"Regarding the FULLRIVER AGM Batteries I was selling, their prices went up 25% ,
I feel they have out priced themselves at the moment,"

handy
You got me - I hadn't seen that one. Have been looking for one for myself and that is certainly cheaper by far than any where else I've seen. Postage is ok too.
The site on ebay wasnt coming up for me because he has no space between the Full & River.

The brand name is Fullriver [one word no spaces], reason for high price increase is the cost of lead increased by better than 30% over the last couple of years.

Bruce N Sal,

Buying batteries is like buying a Patrol vers Toyota.
They are all good, some better in certain circumcstances than in others etc etc etc.
When you come to the size buy the biggest in AH's that will fit in the spot you want to mount it, in keeping with its price.
Don't scrimp on AH's for the sake of price if you can.
The idea is to keep the battery SOC up and a bigger AH battery will allow you to do that longer and therefore the battery is cycling less over its life and hopefully extending that life.
Personally with your 120Watt panel I would leave the geni at home but take your charger for mains back up at parks etc.

Cheers
Trevor

Bruce & Salli,

You need a physical place that provides some sort of Customer Service, "just in case".

I bought my 100 A/h Remco from Whitworths Marine & Leisure. They have been stable at $339 for months. This is the largest battery in the Remco range but big enough IMO. Whitworths have outlets in all States.

The above advice sounds good. I bought a fullriiver recently for around the mentioned prices. I got a friend who did some work for a battery plus joint who promised him a twenty per cent discount when ever he wanted a battery. They quoted $80 over the price I got and told him he was saving $50. They must have took him for a mug.

the moral is shop around I guess.

Bruce & Salli,
I put eight 100 AH Full River batteries into my boat a year ago and they have had a lot of abuse since then and are working fine. Bought them online but can't remember where. Make sure you specify deep cycle and check the specs to be sure. They do need to be ventilated.

Has anyone looked here?

http://www.exploroz.com/Customers/R_J_Batteries.aspx

There are numerous Fullriver models available, but the two common ones are HGL (not HCL) and DC series. HGL is a standby battery which is OK for for light duty cylcic use only. For dedicated Deep-Cylcle use, use the "DC" series. None of them are "Hybrids" they are all Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM).

It is also worth noting that the DC100-12 has been phased out and replaced with the new DC105-12 and the The DC115-12B (note the "B" suffix as there is an "A" version which has different dimensions) has been phased out and is now replaced with the new DC120-12B. Both are the same price as the old models.

This is not an advertisment, just a public sharing of information.

Best regards, Dave Petrie (Fullriver Product Manager, Australia & NZ)
