Over the years l have been a fan of the Cooper ATR tyre on my 4.2lt patrol consistently averaging 85,000 too 95,000km per set. On sealed or gravel roads they have served me well but on the rocky roads l find them too chip and crack. Just recently moved to central Q.L.D and will find myself travel along the rougher rocky roads more. Also in the near future will be driving the cape and around the gulf areas. Experience knowledge on the appropiate tyre suitable for these conditions would be appreciated.
Thankyou
P.S Has anyone had much to do with Toyo M65 or the open country tyre???

Tyres are always designed as the best compromise in performance versus durability for a given road condition. This applies to performance passenger tyres as well as A/T 4x4 tyres.

In order for the compound to withstand the harsh rocky roads you have mentioned the compound will typically wear out faster on normal road use but have the ability to withstand the cut / chip application that you have described.

I cannot recommend one brand or type of tyre as it will be (expensive) trial and error exercise that wins out. Locals will offer the best advice.

When I was out in Springsure, none of the tyres we had on any of the hiluxes lasted more than 30,000km but 85% was on gravel.

I think it was Member Mick O who was saying just the other day that he was very impressed with the Toyo Open Country M/Ts. He does some pretty remote stuff so must be pretty good.

Cheers Kroozer,

Might be time to consider the Cooper ST, STC or STT. Here's the link to POST 74282. Very impressed with the Toyo Open Country MT.
