Hi,

I can't work out the fee structure for SA parks more specifically Mt Remarkable. I note there is an $8 per vehicle entry and then for camping it's got $15. So is that for everyone in the vehicle or per person? I'd hope not per person.

I've found that NPs are a law unto themselves regardless of which state. In NSW as in most other states they charge a "Park Entry Fee" for day visitors and that covers ALL vehicles coming in then on top of that you pay a camping fee to stay overnight, and that's per head.
It really sucks in some parks with very limited facilities, $10 park entry fee then $8 eack for two adults. No showers, very poor pit toilets, no firewood, no drinking water and take your rubbish out with you.
I have spoken to the rangers about these fees and they claim it is justified.... park maintenance for large areas is expensive.
The more remote parks have an honesty box and I can understand some people electing not to pay. JMHO.

Hi Rob, NSW also charge the entry fee for EVERY DAY you are there. Other states charge the entry fee only once. We always pay if it honesty box - we make the decision whether to stay and pay or go elsewhere. Often a park is where we want to be - to see the features of that park.

Hi Austravel, most states charge an entrance fee plus camping fee. Season or multi park passes can be a better option. Love NT, where except for Uluru and Kakadu (fee to be re-introduced next year) which are under a different type of management, entry to NT parks is free, and camping fees reasonable. Some have free gas BBQs.

Some have privately managed camping areas (often just outside the park) and these can be costly, eg Carnarvon Gorge Qld $36 per night.

Austravel, it says $15 per car ($5 per person if no car).

Thanks Motherhen, that's the way I took it as well ie $15 per car so I'm thinking it's $15 whether one person or 6 crammed into the car. I'm hoping so anyway, if not it's $38 for one night and the access for two people.

I guess we are very lucky in Qld, no access fees and overnight camping only recently went up to $5 a person. I notice in NT and WA access and camping fees can be steep in the larger parks but they at least have quite a few free parks to make up for it.

They generally use the mantra of user pays but it only works in some select areas. I don't mind user pays if it's fair and equitable across the board, as a couple with no kids we generally get to subside others. Still no use complaining it's not going to change.

I'll still visit the parks but just thought I'd get another view on the pricing ie either per person or per car.

In Qld we were paying $10 per person per night, regardless of if there were any amenities.

Motherhen they must have been private camps as the NP's fees are only $5 a head in Qld. Even the more popular one's we visit on a regular basis are only $5 each. In Qld though the park can have flush toilets etc like Carnarvon and Blackdown or nothing at all and all the same price.

Hi Austravel - On thinking about it, we had two nights at each park for the $20. We booked on line and i just looked at the receipts to check what we'd paid.

That would be $15 for the vehicle occupants I would think, not per person.

We found the Holiday Pass to be good value when travelling around and staying in SA's National Parks. It covers the vehicle entry fee plus up to 5 nights camping in most of the states N Pks and Conservation areas - I think Wilpena Pound campground being privately owned is not included but Lincoln and Innes are.

It cost us around $50 earlier this year from memory but we are pensioners so there was a reduced fee.

Mt Remarkable - Mambray Creek campground - has hot showers and flushing toilets and is great value for money. Good walking trails from the campground too.

Hope you enjoy your stay.

Regards,

Heather

Thanks Heather, I'm really looking forward to it. Will post up my itinerary in a month or so to get comments from locals or those that have been there.

If you going to other SA parks a 2 month SA Parks pass is a bargain. $55 last time I looked includes entry fees to all parks other than desert parks. Includes camping in park for 5 consecutive days or more if not busy. We go to SA often as SA parks pass is affordable and good value.
NSW, TAS & QLD bloody ripoff and no longer go. WA needs to get their act together. WA dont have a decent NP parks website. VIC mostly free and good with good website.

I'll have to check out the park passes. I thought Qld were pretty good compared to others but once I check out the passes may change my mind.
