Hi Hawker,

you will find that this site maintains an up to date list of road conditions. Just go to the "Roads" tab at the top of the forum page. Likewise, check out the treks section for great detail on the roads you intend travelling. Here is a link to the KIDMAN WAY.

Each state will have recent road conditions posted on their Roads Authority website as well.

Finally I can always recommend a search of the site using the search facility on the top right of the screen. Very helpful if you know the name of the town/area you want to spend a while. It will identify relevant posts, blogs, treks and places.

Hope this helps. Enjoy the trip.

Mick

Hawker5,

We came back home from Longreach via the Kidman Way in October this year. The road is quite good. Make sure you take time out to stay at the Kidmans Camp Caravan Park at Bourke. It is about 8km north of Bourke. A little oasis and well worth the stay.

Have a great trip. You will love Alice as well. When there, you really should see the various gorges out that way. A visit to the tourist information centre will see you right on how to get to them.

Mick & Catmandoo have given you very good advice, all I can add is don't try and "do it" in a few days spend as long as possible out there, there is just soooooo much to see and do, and best to wait until May through Sept to do it, it's just too warm just now to be maximum fun.
Enjoy
Cheers Colin.

In addition to the other advice, if you don't already have a copy of Camps 5 then get a copy before you head off. The information you gather from this site (ExlporeOz) and Camps 5 really combine to give you a heap of great info.

Rob.

There's free brochures on the Kidman Way and Matilda Hwy available from the Qld Outback Tourism website:

Plenty of other info as well.
