G'day
I am hoping to hear from anyone that has been to Curtis Island off
Gladstone. I am interested in the
camping there. I have looked at the NP website and it says they have
camping areas and you can
bush camp - must be self-sufficient.
We are self-sufficient and will be towing a camper trailer with our Patrol. I see you can get the barge from
Gladstone. We are looking at going there in April 2010.
Any info much appreciated.
Cheers
Ev

Hi Evan
The Curtis Island NP is on the NE corner of Curtis, up near the Cape Capricorn lighthouse, and that area isn't accessible by vehicle without special ferries from The Narrows or Port Alma. But there is a campground down at the southern end of Curtis just out of Southend, which is accessible by regular ferry to
Gladstone. Bookings for that are through the local council. Is this what you had in mind?
Cheers, John

Hi John,
Thanks for the info. From what I have read it sounds like a nice sort of a place. Were there many people
camping there when you were there? There isn't a lot of info on it which suggests it may be a little known area which is a jewel or
well known area to stay away from!!From the few photo's I have seen it looks the goods and not a crowded place out of peak season.
Cheers
Ev

Hi Evan
Haven't camped at that site, but I've been a few times to beach camps further up the island. Once (years ago) we arranged for Monte Christo station to pick us up from the eastern side of the Narrows crossing, and to transport us over to the ocean side. They used to have cabins for hire there, but I think that's all finished now. Most people who go to Curtis (or Facing Island) do so by boat, naturally.
Cheers, John

If you are wanting info,
Call the Calliope office of the
Gladstone Regional Council on 07 4975 8100 and ask to speak with Deanne. She is the Parks and Gardens Admin Officer and can provide you with all the info you require (
Well should anyway).
I would visit Curtis Island as soon as possible as it is where they want to put a couple of LNG Plants in the very near future ;)
Cheers Kev

Hi Sir Kev,
Thanks for that, I will give her a call. I did read about the LNG Plants, shame really that such industrialisation will ruin what looks to be a beautiful place
Cheers

Forty years ago, a friend's uncle had a
shack at South End on Curtis Island. I went there a couple of times with my friend's family. There was no barge then. Some people who owned
shacks there had old cars that had been taken across the narrows at times when the channels were silted up and the tide was really low. My friend's uncle had a very old Whippet utility that was started with a crank handle and had about a half-turn of play in the steering wheel. Someone else had an
Austin Champ that would go just about anywhere.
I don't necessarily remember Curtis as being a beautiful place, but it was largely untouched and the fishing was good. I remember a few of us taking a 4 litre ice cream container of large oysters from one spot on the ocean side of the island, and there were still thousands more left to continue growing.
I agree that it's a shame that a major industrial complex is about to be built there. Hopefully it will occupy only a small part of the island.
Peter.
