Victoria High Country, Sydney to Melbourne

Hi there
I have the opportunity to cross the High Country in the first week of January w/ my Prado, MTZ tires, and 2 inch lift. The missus will be flying to Melbourne and I will be driving w/ 4 teenage kids.
I have done Mt Stirling to Mt Buller 2 years ago which I really enjoyed.

The plan is to leave around lunch time, get to ALBURY or WANGARATTA, stay overnight then leave really early the next day do a nice track and pick up the missus in the afternoon from the airport.

QUESTION:
Any suggestions which route to take?

Any info will be greatly appreciated!

Thats pushing it a bit. To get from Wangaratta to Sydney on the tar is about an 8+ hour drive these days. To do it through a "track" up in the hill is at best a two day drive. I would suggest that you consider the tar. I am not a "knower-of-all up" there and I hope someone has a solution for you. But I think you better tell her to get plane the next day's flight.

I would suggest though to check the weather BEFORE going in and even then don't rely on it and watch out for rain. Because there is a lot of clay you may get in okay but to get out if it rains!! Now thats a real gotchya'.

It is one of the most interesting and beautiful hilly places we have been to. Deserts, the tropics and places like the Kimberley have their beauty and this is another example why we love this 4WD camping. Only been there a couple of times and we are going back twice in january.

Mornign Muz, I just hope they remove the roof rack before I swallow the thing, and I have insisted on Simex tyres on the vehicle in case it needs to back up for a second opinion. You know how the muck cleaning attributes of Simex are in that bleep uation.

Here is an easy one and spectacular,
Go toward Mt Hotham, all bitumen, nearly to Hotham, turn right toward Dargo, not far in on the right you wil find Blue rag track, only goes 5 k's from the Dargo high plains road but it's a ripper!!
Or Craigs hut, not to hard to get to, good views and enough for you to wish you never went there in the first place without being able to spent more time , cos , once you've been there, you will start planning the next time, but I think you already know that :)))).

Great track. Heart in mouth unless you have your tyre pressures low for grip. Great views to Hotham from it too.

The magnitude of the fires of 2006 is visible everywhere and so many of the dead ones ready for a fall in high winds.

Hi there
I just had a look at some youtube clips. one says that there is a track that takes you down to the river on the other side. Have you done this and would you recommend it?

I don't really like to travel the same way back.
your pictures look awesome!

Josef, it is a track in and out, the track ends at the river. We didn't go down to the river the other side, but were talking with two guys who had. They seemed more concerned with the track we travelled.

Being a 3 hour drive from Wang to the airport it wont leave you with much time to explore the High Country.
One option that may be OK depending on pick up time would be to head along the King Valley through Whitfield towards Lake William Hovell, up Long Spur, down Sandy Flat Track taking the 2 river crossings to Top Crossing Hut for morning tea. Up Buckland Spur to Tomahawk Hut & out to Mansfield via Carters Road.
Eastimate just under 4 hours. (Wang to Mansfield) Easy intermediate driving. All covered on Rooftop's Bright-Mansfield Adventure Map.
Cheers Craig.................

thanking you for your advise.
when I did the Mt Stirling to Mt Buller via Craig's hut I could not believe the beauty of that place. I have been to many places out west, as I like the red dust. We are really blessed in this country with the diversity of the landscape. I came to Australia in 82 from Switzerland planning to stay for 1 year then off to America. However after a few months and many trips in my Charger, I soon realised that this is the place I want to stay.
