All those who would like to see this area should go soon. As we know Cliffs (Portman) are already mining Windarling and Mt Jackson and want to expand.
Posieden want to get into the act at Bungalbin and with our present government being all about mining and not caring about conservation it will probably happen. Wonder how many reports they are sitting on?

Whole heartedly agree with you ricochet. That whole northern Yilgarn is a fabulous region to explore, I've been going there every chance I get for the last 15 years and I've still got more to see. But a lot of features are not seen from the main drag, one has to traverse tracks that are overgrown/closed in at the top thus means getting one's vehicle scratched and the very real potential of stacking tyres.

I was fortunate enough to explore Windarling Range and photograped most of the iron/rock formations including one that I named WA's Three Sisters before it became and active mine. The Three Sisters haven't been abolished yet but they a sitting on the edge of a huge hole in the ground.

Cliffs want to expand there Mt Jackson operation 'J1' which will be about 4-5ks from the Mt Jackson Homestead, which is fastly becoming a pile of rubble and will probably disappear from the face of the earth like the 1800's Jackson town site has.

I was out for a fortnight in September of this year and on the Diemals/Menzies road there is a new sign for another mining mob which read Treppo-Grande Gold, Iron Ore Project Manning Range W.A. so it looks like they may want to be attacking Mt Manning Range which I think is an A Class reserve.

I wouldn't stress.

That area has been purchased for conservation along with a stack of other N. Yilgarn areas.

There is a draft management plan in preparation.

See Draft MP - Northern Yilgarn which includes a mudmap of the conservation boundaries.

Cheers.

They've still got to comply with environmental regulations and have approved management plans should should environmental issues occur above and below the surface. There is a lot of drilling being done in that area to locate and define the problems.

My DEC contact has just told me that:

"We are currently preparing a newsletter (to stakeholders). However the letter will mainly cover that the draft management plan has been submitted to the Minister for Environment. She is to release it to the public for comment.

I was notified that there are some comments on Helena and Aurora Range on exploreoz. Currently there are live exploration tenemants over Bungalbin East and Helena and Aurora Range".

Cheers.

looks like most of you are ahead of me. The draft plan doesn't cover all the area and the mining companies still have access to a lot of that country. an example is Mt Jackson was bought by Cliffs to give them easier access, they will hand some over for conservation but not the prospective areas (the ranges).

The b's won't hand over anything. It's the State Gov't that determines the land use.

And I agree with those that wouldn't trust this partic. government one cm.

It's an environmental crime the way these precious banded iron formations with their unique ecologies are being hunted down.

Not so cheery.

Just in case peope wonder what the significance is. These BIF ranges are generally pretty small and comparativly isolated to each other in an otherwise flat landscape. this allows unique flora and its associated fauna (not so much) to be quite dependant on that particular range it evolved on.

there is a type of thistle that grows on them and ive seen nowhere else. one of the thistle trees was the size of a medium tree

I'm planning a single vehicle trip in a 60 series Landcruiser through this area for April 2010, but cannot find much information about the tracks through there.

My idea is to work our way from Southern Cross to Menzies - then on a big circuit to Kookynie, Queen Victoria Springs, Cundalee, Balladonia, Old Telegraph Track, Norseman, Hyden. But the area I am interested in is this one around Helena Range.

the worst case scenario is that I travel Bullfinch to Evanston, then turn right to Ballard and Menzies on major roads. But I'd welcome tips on the tracks in the big blank area that covers these ranges and places to see for something a little more isolated.

I've got Ozi Explorer and the 250k topo maps.

you can get to the evanston/menzies road direct from the HA ranges a couple of ways either east or west of the hunt ranges to pitsporrum rocks and then past currara saok and yowie rocks
yowie rocks track
ive travelled a fairbit through most of those areas you mention and can answer any questions

Thanks get outmore and John Baas - I've checked both out, and also printed out the relevent 250k topo maps to give me a better bigger picture of the tracks.

get outmore, your write up on the Overlander forum is a couple of years old now. If you have been back into the area, has the track got enough traffic recently to keep the areas you noted as overgrown? ie Currara Soak and Yowie Rocks area.

I'll be sure to take a track log of the section between the H and A ranges and the Menzies Road, most likely via Yowie Rocks to add to the two other plots of this area.

Unless theres been a drilling campaighn in the area its unlikely its been seeing alot of traffick.

the most overgrown parts where when i did more exploring from Currara soak as there is a ridge that runns near there with the 2nd and 3rd highest points on the kalgoorlie 250k mapsheet behind mt burgess.

I can email the track plot if you like

I'll PM you with my email address, thanks for the offer.

Are you saying that the "main" track is more defined?

I'm not so concerned about scratchyness, it is just that we'll be travelling in a single vehicle and last time I took my wife out I exceeded her comfort by a considerable amount east of Nullagine. So this trip is designed to both get me out into the bush, but also to give her some calm reassurances about the whole idea of remote travel.

Too much of 'Where the bleep is the track", and me mumbling things like "I don't know where we are" will not enhance the experience, if you get my drift :-)

Hi Tim, have just got back to this after fishing and 4wd'ing at Jurien and environs.

I wouldn't mind trying Dave's route myself so if you do get there, would you mind posting a trk conditions status report pls.

Cheers.

Plenty to checkout in the area, could come up the Gus Luck track (see 4WD Days in the Goldfields 2nd edition by Westprint). also through Jaurdi to the south. other spots to visit could be Mt Elvire, Johnson Rocks etc.
There has been track clearing done in the last couple of years by DEC and there is planned for a couple more in the first half of this year. Kalgoorlie DEC office could give you a status update on them, 9080 5555 is the number.
Enjoy your trip.

It's my intention to load the plot John, pity to have gaps in that area. Get Outmore has emailed me his plot of the area which I've not got around to checking out yet. I went hiking around Pemberton instead!

Thanks Ricochet for the update too - I'll follow it up.
