The thieves are out there be warned
When travelling around(key word )the big smoke take care or your pin number
Found out today my savings savings card was skimmed at the ATM last week, here on the Nth'n beaches.
Why do they pick on us poor people up here.
They got me for 2k withdrawn at another ATM in another suburb on Sunday.
And allot of other people as
well, the bank was full of people with the same thing, and a friend of ours was caught also
They hit about 3 suburbs, Mona vale ,
Avalon ,Warriwood.
St George bank was great the money was back in the account this afternoon.
I thought i was careful and always aware of skimming devices.
Definitely slippery Devils.

This brings up an interesting issue. Most skimming devices are from stand alone ATMs where the skimmers can quickly attach the device to the card slot of the ATM and install a camera. Picture the scenario. A guy in official looking garb walks up, puts up a
sign saying the ATM is temporarily closed. He installs the skimmer and camera to catch your PIN in a couple of minutes and walks away.
Too easy. He comes back later to find out what he's captured. Just like throwing a crab pot into the river.
So how do you get around this? Simple, don't use the bank or other stand alone ATMS - use your friendly
supermarket.
What I now do is when I go to the
supermarket I ask for cash out if I need it. Their little portable machines can't have skimmers attached and there is no way that there will be a camera to pick up your PIN. MOST importantly, you will not be charged $2 to get your money. There will be a small fee but far less than this exorbitant rip off.
If we all start doing this and avoid the ATMs with all their issues then maybe the banks will have to rethink how they do things.
If you do have to use an ATM then make sure that when you put in your PIN that you cover up your keystrokes using some sort of blind. I use my wallet.

I usually get any cash needed at the
supermarket. For the reasons you said.
And very rarely use an ATM, that was the first time i had used the ATM for months.
Bingo!

It was those exact EFTPOS machines at Maccas that skimmed million in the last few months. They are harder to set up, need to have inside knowledge and time to swap out the normal EFTPOS machines for the modified ones.
But its possible and they did it!
Matt.

I was talking to an English tourist last week who had all her bank accounts frozen because someone in Europe was busted with her banking details.
I feel confident banks will refund money fraudulently taken from your accounts. Her problem was that she was in Australia & had no way of accessing money. Credit cards stopped, bank accounts frozen & no travellers cheques & no branch of her bank in Australia either.
If going OS it would probably be worthwhile to have credit cards from 2 or more separate banks, so that if one is frozen you could still use another & not be left high & dry like this poor woman.
All goes to show that cash is still king.
