Hi - we were there in 2005 and we had to go into an overflow - when you get there you go to the visitor info place and they give you "overflow" places - we stayed at the pistol club - not as spacious as the showgrounds or pcyc - but lovely people, and spotlessly clean - a little bit like bush camping with facilities really - from what I remember you can only stay maximum of a week in overflow - and what a lot of people do is go early in the morning and line up at parks, waiting for someone to leave - first in best dressed kind of thing - because as far as I know you can't book in peak time (grey nomad season).
Lovely place to visit.

Tuck, It is as Julie advises except that the caravan parks phone through to the Visitors Centre with the number of vacancies twice a day which are posted on a board out the front. The reason for the limited stay at the overflow sites is that they don't want business being taken away from the caravan parks. Palm Grove looks like a good park. Cable Beach Caravan Park looks like they jam you in. The other nice park starts with a T and is also around at Cable Beach (sorry name of park I can't recall)
Was up there in November, plenty of room at the parks then.

Cheers

You can book at cable beach c/park but it really becomes sardine city , lots of standing year to year bookings by regulars that demand and get the same site year after year , its not unusual to be shifted from a site to another when a regular rocks up .

Even in August/September it is a sardine city. Did it for one night. Would never do it again.

Better spots elsewhere.

We stayed at Cable Beach in June this year and I would say its the most

disorganised office I have ever seen.

They dont even have a computer booking system and it took 4 phone calls to

get a confirmed booking.

They have over 400 sites and jam you in.

The toilets we used were less than perfect anytime.

Its noisy with cars coming and going 24/7 fishing or whatever.

Would never go back to Broome for several other reasons as well.

The other Broome park that Mowing mentions, starting with T is Tarangau. We have stayed there a couple of times and its a pleasant park, not too crowded, good ablution block. In 2008 we had to return to Broome to deal with a mechanical problem and the folk at Tarangau very kindly fitted our 2 vehicles in at short notice when we explained our predicament.

Cheers, Val.

Cable Beach was $41 a night. No extension possible, people waiting for you to go. And no discount memberships either

They charged us $1 a page to RECEIVE a fax hate to think how much to send one.

5 pages I could have bought a ream of paper for that

Friends were at Tarangau looked quite nice when we visited.

Only highlight of Broome was the trip to the Horizontal Falls with Horizontal

Falls Adventures They are the one with the 500hp boat

$100 cheaper than the other outfit and a great day out.

We went thru the Falls a total of 10 times.

Just make sure you ask about tide times and pick a day like we did when it was highest at about 5am.

2nd fall was still too high to go up first time so they cooked us brekky and then we went back and had a great run.

The flight down the coast was much smoother than driving up to Cape Levique as well.

We stayed in Broome end of July 2007. All the Caravan Parks were booked so the visitors centre sent us to the PCYC. Had every intention of trying the parks but with the low cost (I think it was $25 per night from my poor memory) and the location, we spent the week there. It was cramped but clean and had a kids room and a gym/basketball court they could use.

We were in Broome in August of this year and stayed in the park run by the Seventh Day Adventist Church. It was excellent, clean facility with very friendly staff. It also is classed as an overflow park but why bother about any other.
We were there for the Stairway to the Moon. Just a tip, go the night before the official night as there were a lot less people and we all thought it to be better anyway.
Enjoy.

Hi Mal and Di, We have done the Stairway to the Moon from a couple of places -The Mangrove Hotel and Town Beach and found that "The Mangrove" was a much better place to see it, not so crowded to the point where you had to have the camera over you head to take a picture as there were so many people in front. They have a takeaway set up and of course you can get a drink, they do it pretty well there. We go to Broome twice a year -July and November and really prefer November as there is 50% less people and the weather is warmer and you get the start of the storms.

Cheers

Yep re the above - Tarangau is just around the corner from the mega busy Cable Beach 'sardine' CP - Tarangau was great for us (3 nights) - cruised in at 10.30am with no booking and they put us under a spreading mango tree, just by reception (we had a camper then) - excellent ! One thing though - "Park Full" signs often don't mean that parks are full (must be a WA thing :-o).... go in and ask anyway. We were agreeably surprised on at least two occasions.

We have been there and stayed on 5 different occasions. Twice at Cable Beach C'van Park no problems but out of season. On two other occasions at the Broome C'van Park, first on the left as you drive in towards town. Not fancy but clean and willing to try and fit you in. You can pre book at the small Bird Sancturary park about 15 kms out (dirt/sandy road in) and right on Roebuck Bay, just walk across the sandhill to view the "staircase" just you and the moon.

regards Mike.

If you are into free camping get the Camps 5 book. My wife and i purchased it last week via the net.Worth every cent.It gives you all the free camps in each state and caravan parks with a description of the facilities avaliable.Definately a cheaper option if you dont like the crowds at the caravan parks.
