Hi all, just doing the research, I am doing a trip in July 2010 including
Corner country and the
Birdsville track, once we reach
Marree we are looking at the
North Flinders Ranges. So my question is where to go? what to see? Is it camper trailer friendly?
Thanks in advance

Mate,
No shortage of info on 4wd parks in the area.
If you're interested in the cultural side of it, you couldn't go past
Iga Warta
Our Visit thereTheir web page
We did an LCOOL trip there a couple of years ago and Warraweena was a ripper. See
here
There's a couple of other parks shown on the LCOOL trip report - see them from the main page at

Complements of the season Steve,
Travelled out that way a few times towing the Camper. The northern Flinders and Gammons are a great neck of the woods and one of my favourites. Easy to navigate and camper trailer friendly.
There is some good 4x4 tracks in the Gammons and
the Loop drive with a stay at Grindells hut is always great. Chambers gorge is another.
The Strez (Strz for the purists LOL) can get a bit corrugated after the high traffic periods like school Holidays so many opt for the
Bore Track as an alternative from
Innamincka to Cameron's Corner (Via Bollards
Lagoon Station). The detour from
Birdsville down to the Cooper is always worthwhile regardless of direction. The area is steeped in history (
Bourke and Wills) and the Cooper is a fantastic place to rest a while. The
Birdsville Track and then southeast down the
Walkers Crossing Track is a good route to access
Innamincka. The
Birdsville Track is a superhighway of a road these days and is largely only affected by adverse weather conditions. I've written a few
blogs about the areas which may give you an idea or two.

Alternately, check the trek notes here on the site as they are always a great source of info for the areas and
routes you intend taking.

Mick,
That is a pretty good overview of the Northern Flinders, it is one of my favourite areas too.
Mudduck,
If you look at my profile page you will see a few photos of the areas Mick has talked about. I could spend weeks in the area between
Innamincka,
Lyndhurst and
Cameron Corner, so much to see and do.
It is also usually fairly easy to find a spot to be alone for a day or two if you look carefully.

If you're going to Maree - I'd suggest a one nighter at Muloorina and
camp on the edge of the
billabong - Its magnificent and very reasonably priced $5 from memory plus a donation to the RFDS ..

Mandrake and other readers,
As I worked at
Muloorina Station as a general station hand in 1966-67 I wish to advise the so called Billabong/
Water hole as it is commonly referred to is in fact the Frome River. The
water runs from the
bore located at Muloorina
homestead.
Prior to a certain mining company buggering the original
water supply up the
water came from a
bore further south towards
Marree.
Cheers P&J

If you like the arid landscape, then
Arkaroola is amazing. Even better if the
water holes are full . Echo
camp backtrack is a must see,but extrememly steep in
places. You can do this track in a day, then back to
camp at
Arkaroola itself. Definately no trailer on this track and be sure to go the correct way from the
camp at
Arkaroola .The road from
Lyndhurst to
Arkaroola is very scenic.
Balcanoona is worth a look.
Arkaroola itself is very expensive and was, when we were there, always running out of ice. You had to beat the rush when it arrived or you missed out. Better if you have a fridge. This was 20 yrs. ago though, things may have changed. Showers were
Bore water guaranteed to cement you hair. Wash it somewhere else. Grindles Hut is good & supposed to be haunted, you have to book ahead for a stay. There is a
camp just down from it though. The Hut at the back of Grindles Hut was great when it rained on us. Just at the back of the house. No one was in the house so we were O.K to use the Shepherds Hut for shelter. Also agree with Mick O. Enjoy your trip &Take care. Bye, Sally
