G'day, quiet common to find some oil in the i/c. Depends on how much and if your engine is using lots of oil? Lots of smoke out the exhaust? If not using lots of oil and no smoke, don't worry about it. Good luck. John

Hi, if it isn't using oil and the smoke has stopped with the new injectors, drive it for a while and see what happens, keep a close eye on the oil level. Good luck.

My 22 y/o Volvo with factory turbo petrol engine has a drain plug on the bottom of the intercooler which is supposed to be drained every 12 months. The last time I did it after about three years ;-)) it had about a half a cupful of oil in it, the entire inlet tract has a light film of oil on it as well.
It is normal for a turbo to blow a bit of oil past the impeller shaft as the oil is under engine oil pressure to provide lubrication to the turbo bearings.
If the engine is blowing lot's of blue smoke that is oil burning off and you would notice the sump level needing regular topping up.
If the smoke is black it is unburnt diesel usually caused by injectors or too much right foot.

Don;t worry about it unless you have oil consumption

Most of our TD will contaminate the intake with oil from the blowby gasses being routed back into the intake from the rocker cover.

Your 2.8 definately does this and people incorrectly diagnose turbo seals when its just the normal operation of a closed loop blowby system.

Long term problem is the oil can break down the rubber hoses, contaminate the engine and block the intercooler.

You can fit a blowby filter (much better than a catch can) like a Provent 200 or similar and then degrease your intercooler and you find in a few months the oil is all clear and the intake stays that way.

All the best
Matt.

Hi there Fridey
I have just fitted a Provent Filter to my CRD 2.8 KJ Jeep Cherokee. It will filter out the oil particles before going into the inter cooler and has a drain at the bottom that when connected to a length of 10mm hose, can remove the collected oil.If you are interested go to the ausjeepoffroad.com website and then to the KJ F.A.Q page. There is a very well detailed thread describing the fitting and also step by step photographs. Sydney Filters at (02)9672 7008 can supply the unit for around $200.00.Worth every cent. Let me know how you go.
