Need some help with a trip in March starting at Tallem Bend in SA and winding our way back up the Murray into Vic.
Will have 10 to 12 vehicles (all 4x4s) and are looking at good on the river (preferably bush camps) as we make our way up to the source of the Murray.
Looking at doing 150/200Kms per day then camping on the River each night.
Any suggestions say around Morgan to Waikerie, Loxton to Berri, East of Mildura.
Then around Robinvale to Swan Hill, Echuca to Cobram, Possibly around Lake Hume.

Any suggestions would be welcome anywhere along the Murray.
Have a great new year

Depending on when your travelling as they can be busy at times, here are a few for you. Near Loxton, there is Thiele's Sandbar but is close to Loxton, then Clarkes Sandbar near Lock 4 which is a great spot but private property and a small fee is payable. PH (08) 8582 2233. Just out of Berri there is Kataraptko Creek National Park and has plenty of good camp sites but you won't all fit on one site but they are relatively close together. There are Enviro dunnies and are well maintained. Between Berri and Lyrup near the Ferry are the Lyrup flats and they are all good too. Fees are payable as well. All spots are on the river except Katy Creek. (plenty of water and is a great spot to Canoe.)
There are also campsites near Cobdogla but the highway is only a 100 meters away.
Up above Renmark and over the border is Ned's Corner with plenty of camping anywhere and everywhere.
If you want more Info, MM member Blaze as he also lives in Berri.
My pick would be Clarke's but its up to you.

Bottle bend on the NSW side near Gol Goll is a great spot, plenty of room for all the vehicles.

A couple of good sandbars on the river east of Mildura here. They can be accessed via Nangiloc from Redcliffs are by a leisurly drive through the Murray-Kulkyne National Park (Hattah Lakes).

Easy to get to and a great spot to rest by the river.

Just cut and past straight into Google Earth.

Hi Rod and Lorna

Just vehicles? If you all have campers as well you will need roomy spots.

Of the places we stayed this year, there was oodles and oodles of room at Bottle Bend near Mildura. No amenities.

Near Renmark we went into Lyrup Flats (it is in a national park so honesty box fee). We had it to ourselves and there were quite a few tracks to follow. There were toilets, but not easy to find - we were not near them but our caravan is fully equipped.

At Berri, there is a nice free camping area with water and flush toilets at Martins Bend. It is a nice but popular spot with a number of people staying for up to four weeks, so may not be room for your big group. We watched a ski boat event here but did not stay overnight.

Theile's Sandbar at Loxton is not so big, but there would be room for you all. Although it is virtually in town, it was very quiet and we were the only campers. You can't get down to the water here (or not easily). No amenities.

Lindsay Island (Vic) is good - no facilities, but right on the river. Several spots with lots of room. Turn left after Paringa and follow signs to Murray Sunset NP. It's a little interesting getting out of there after rain.

Hi Rod
Like young Dasher mentioned above, he is a local with local advise. Also while in the Renmark area, you could drop out to the following. Calperum Station has great spots, same as Chowilla Game Reserve. At Chowilla Game Reserve, camping spots 1&2 have lots of room and check out "Ron's Camp", again shown on my Trek File on EO. Another great place that will hold many vehicles is on Lindsay Island and go to the place signposted "The Caravan" I did a Trek File here on EO, so check it out for a full run down on Lindsay Island. You can spend a lot of time on Lindsay Island, with more great camping spots that you can choose.

Enjoy Australia's Longes River.

Cheers

Stephen

Hi Rod and Lorna
There is a series of reasonably priced booklets, called "Murray River Access", which are available through the ExplorOz, see link below.
They are quite informative.

Took the words outa my mouth (well sort of). We have purchased what currently amounts to the full set of these and they appear to be excellent value, having used only 2 of the "gazillions" of sites in then thus far in 2 years.
Wish the SA Departments of "They" or "Them" or "Whom Ever" would get their game together and do similar!
Well worth the money in my book!
From a South Ozzie it is so hard for me to say "Well Done Victorian's" but there I have done it!

If you want to travel along the northern bank of the river from Renmark to Mildura, we can highly recommend Fort Courage which is about 30km west of Wentworth. It is a smallish caravan park owned and run by a big fishing club but its open to the public for $14 per site a night. For that you get excellent amenities including a big well appointed camp kitchen, firewood, green grass and fishing as well.Image Could Not Be Found

Wow, what a bevy of answers!!!

Thanks for the reply's and I will now go through the suggestions and work out our stop points.

We will be taking trailers or Off Road C/Vans so the bigger the site the better.

How good is this forum to be able to ask a question and get such a great variety of choices and advice.

Thanks once again for the interest and I will let you know our progress on planning.

Cheers and Happy new year for tomorrow

Morgan to Waikerie:
Cordola, about 5 k south of Morgan off the Blanchtown road, Privately owned, about $5-10 per car.
Maize Island just east of Waikerie

Loxton to Berri,
Katarapko, southern end, National Park
Lyrup Flats

Robinvale to Swan Hill:
Any of the state forests on the VIC side of the river are good.

Echuca to Cobram
Barmah State Forest - lots of good spots

Cheers
