Thanks for the feedback on 'which way' in my other post :-)

I've taken the advice on board and to cover most of the suggestions, I'll go up via Landsborough Hwy, and back via the Mitchell Hwy,, roads permitting.

Link to my map here.

Now I need opinions on how long it will take?

Google Maps says approx 21 hours for both, so I initially thought to take 2 days. Big driving days, but I'll be alone (no kids to exercise) and my goal is not scenery this trip, its the Qantas museum and some k's on my car (to avoid a tax payment) and a reky for family trips later.

Having said that, I wonder if on these roads, 2 days travel each way will not be enough???

Any opinion most welcome.

Hi James, I just did a "dummy" run on my gps mapping software (2010 City Navigator) based on your map and it came up with the following...

Syd - Longreach = 1673 km
Time = 17hrs 30mins

Now that is obviously not taking into account any fuel stops, rest periods etc. so you will have to make adjustments for any extra time that will occur.

Cheers, John

Thanks John, appreciate you doing that. I've found Google over estimates a little, so I'd say you are spot on.

Those are long driving days without a relief driver James - take care. Could you sneak an extra day for safety?

I think I may have to, as I'm not very experienced on these roads either.

James - We share the driving, maximum 2 hours behind the wheel, and consider anything much over 700 km a long day. I know that younger drivers will do much more than that, do it quicker and without a break......but they don't always arrive at their destination. If you're not accustomed to driving country roads, be aware that night driving has its own hazards - kangaroos, especially around dawn and dusk are drawn to the road where water runoff often leads to better grass. If one jumps into your path, don't kill yourself trying to avoid it. Do what you can, but jumping on the brakes and swerving can be very expensive and could cost your family their Dad.

Suggest take a bit more time for this drive, enjoy it and arrive home relaxed rather than exhausted.

Travel safe

Gday James,
From my experience of doing this trip many times, from Sydney Dubbo, Bourke Charlieville, barcalidine and then Longreach, if i leave Sydney about 2am ill get to Charlieville just on sunset. I fuel up have a feed and drive to a rest stop about 100km south of barcaldine,( just a big parking area on the left heading north), crash there for a few hours and then make it into Longreach about 8am.

Thanks LHN. Can I ask why you go this way, and not say Gunnedah, Moree, St George?

(I'm thinking of going up the above way and coming back your way) Just wondering if there's any big difference?

Your're right Greendog. I'm used to easy driving of freeways (or bumper to bumper slow traffic),, so I'm wanting to fit in say 2 overnights in motels, making it a 3 day trip each way.

Any suggestions anyone??

Gday Greendog,
Driving 12hrs for some people is a walk in the park. So i take it from your post it takes you 2 days to get from Sydney to brisbane I used to drive 380kms a day in the Blue Mountains. Nearly 2000km a week for a government authority. Truck drivers constantly drive 12 hour days. Im no truck driver or professional driver but im a very experienced driver on both country and urban roads. And my driving record is unblemished. I think working night shift helps aswell. Im wide awake all night and can survive on five hours sleep a day. It just depends on what your used to.

Cool, I'll come back that way, (conditions permitting) looks the more intersting in terms of an area I've not seen before so something to look forward to after Longreach.

James

I don't normally "play the man",,,, but what you are planning is madness in the extreme I hope we are not on the road at the same time.

The papers are full of "supposedly responsible" dying on th eroads for lack of rest and sleep.

Given your admitted background and lack of experience, I would urge you plan this better.

You don't even have an "emergency"or the like to demand a trip of this distance/time.

Even experienced long haul truckies are now restricted to 14 hours per driving period with (i think) 10 hours rest.

Madness to even plan this...

Hi Barry, thanks for the input:-) As per my post just above I've amended my plans to make it a 3 day trip up, 2 days rest in Longreach, and a 3 day trip back.

The stopovers I have in mind at the moment (Narrabri, Mitchell, Longreach, then back via Cunnamulla, Dubbo, home) are pretty much all 6-7 hours apart conditions permitting (Longreach/Cunnamulla may be a little longer),, so all daylight drives with time for photo stops. (just bought a new hi-def video camera I want to try)

I’m pretty good driving long distances, have a 140k round trip to work each day, and am pretty fussy about distractions while driving,, hence no kids on this trip;-)

Have years of country experience and the vehicle I’ll take is only 18 months old with all the mod cons and easy to handle, and not even towing this time. So apart from last minute weather condition changes, I feel I'm pretty well planned.

I AM LOOKING for motel ideas for this trip if anyone has any...?

We did Brisbane to Winton 3 weeks ago in 2 relatively comfortable days pulling a camper trailer travelling 90 to 95 kph.I would add on another day for the Sydney to Queensland part for a three day trip. I think two days in the expected heat and average road conditions as a less than safe , but it depends on vehicle and driver ability.
Cheers.
