I fitted a new hella plug to the power cord and it now works a treat.

No more hot beer, don't know why they fit a $2 plug to a $1000 fridge and why the fridge mechanic quoted me a month of Sundays to fix a problem that I fixed in 30 minutes.

Just wondering what size fuse I should fit between the battery and the female end of the hella plug.

Regards
Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Good to see yu have resolved your problem.

The Waeco draws a maximum of 3-4 amps or thereabouts.
A common size fuse is 10 amps and this should protect both the fridge and the wiring circuit.

Place the fuse as close to the battery as practical.

good to hear that you've sorted the problem.

the fuse size depends upon the wire size. reason being is that the fuse is actually there to be the weakest link to protect the wiring from going up in smoke. the item at the end of the power cable should be protected by it's own fuse.

but, theory aside. if your fridge is working ok that implies that the wiring is ok. as the fridge will draw ~4-5A when running the suggested 10A fuse should be quite good enough.

cold beer is good :)

As far as my Waeco goes all you need to do is remove the red collar at the end of the existing plug & it becomes a Hella Plug, you don't need a new plug. I installed a Hella female outlet & that was it (plus new 6mm wiring).

I tried removing the red collar on the end of the plug and used it in the Hella socket, but that didn'twork, so the bad connection must have been inside the cigarette plug itself.

I guess the secret is keep trying until you find a good connection or send it to the experts for a month of sundays.

Hi Geoff,
if you run the fridge in 'turbo' mode to get it cold quick it draws 7-8 amps. otherwise it draws the amps as mentioned previously.

Hi Geoff

Just read both your threads so thought i would ask a couple questions

I noted at xmas mine cutting out as soon as battery meter hit 12.39V but was ok when at 12.4. I understand that this may not be what the voltage actually is at the fridge.

What was yours when you measured yours at the fridge compared to what you had at battery or meter?

Did you replace the wiring to your existing plug by running a new line from battery to where you plug it in?

What did you replace the "$2 plug" with?

Did you replace the cord the $2 plug attaches to also as some here have suggested in the past?

My Waeco works a treat when it works so am guessing its nearly time to stop putting off the rewiring job. thanks Mick....

Hi Mick,

I used a Hella Plug which are smaller than the cigarette lighter plug, but more robust. (It could be called something else, but that's what I call it) Find them at Super Cheap / Auto Barn.

I just cut the old plug off and connected the new one, making sure to connect positive to positive. I already had the hella socket on my battery box.

With the old plug the Fridge cut out at 12.6v at the battery, which must have dropped down to 10.5v at the Fridge.

With the new plug I connected the fridge to my spare battery which read 11.4v and the fridge worked fine.

The wire on the cord seems quite heavy enough it's just the cigarette lighter connection is of questionable quality.
