G'day all,I will be in Burke mid march and going to Tibooburra driving a rodeo and towing a 19' van, which road,I don't mind dirt or gravel but don't like corrugation,so to be sensible which is the best option, via Wanaaring or via Cobar or Wilcannia via Louth & Tilpa,
hoping for some helpful advice.

Hamo,

You can get some info from this thread

All dirt/gravel roads in these areas have corrugations it's just a matter of driving to the conditions.

we drove from Burke to Tiboooburra via Wanaaring last July in a standard Hilux.
The road was in very good condition and a very enjoyable trip

Enjoy

Hamo,

I was in Tibooburra recently, (5th January) just as the floods were on.

The road was closed by the RTA who were working on some washouts. the locals said that it ok to use but I decided to go back to Sydney via White Cliffs and Cobar.

In dry condutions its ok with a van on the back, it does get corrgations.

It really depends on your van, is it an off road unit? If not then maybe via Cobar and up the Kidman Hwy.

Today's report.
WILCANNIA TO TILPA (EAST SIDE) SR1 CLOSED
WILCANNIA TO TILPA (WEST SIDE) MR68 (A) CLOSED

You need to check closer to the dates on Western Region and on Central Darling Shire to be sure.

Both the Bourke to Tibooburra Rd and The Darling route are dry weather only and if it rained you could be stuck for quite a period.
The most bitumin would be to go down the highway to Wilcannia then up to white Cliffs on bitumin.
But then White Cliffs to Packsaddle is dry weather only and not gravelled. I understand that they are bitumising the Broken Hill/Tibooburra rd but I do not know how far they have gone .
While the Louth Rd south is shown as a major track , my recollection is that it is unformed ie no gravel, certainly the last 100KM north of Wilcannia is.

So all of the dirt roads are unpredictable. They could be great or corrugated or cut up badly.

Hamo,

I have driven Bourke to Tib in about 6 hours when the road was good and in about 12+ when it was wet and probably closed, local advice from Wanaaring suggested it was open but the signs at Tib end said it was closed. Things are like that out there.

Anyway, the bottom line on those roads is that they are regularly maintained and if you get there just after the grader they are great. If you get there just before the grader they are rough as. If they are wet they get closed pretty quickly but generally re-open in about 24hours.

Their is no way of getting to Tib without the risk of road closures due to rain. The most sealed road is Bourke to Cobar, all sealed about 2.5 to 3 hours. Then west to Broken Hill all sealed and about 4.5 hours probably a bit more towing a 19' van. Then north from BH to Tib 390km about and about 2/3 sealed. I would count on about 5 hours.

From the pics on your profile it looks like you get out there and have a liitle go so I reckon going via Wanaaring should present few problems for you.Check the road conditions section on this site for info that is as good as you will get anywhere.
