Do youself a favour and don't bypass
Mallacoota...you'l get all the canoeing and fishing you could ever want there, and
camp right on the
water with your own little Jetty.
However, being School Hols, you may have trouble getting prime positions there, as
well as most other popular locations up the coast.
Good luck, you'll enjoy the "Big" island.
Fred.

I agree with that, I called into
Mallacoota on a trip to the Great Ocean Rd from Port Macquarie where we live, to Warnambool and was really taken with
Mallacoota. Normal
population is around 2000 people but in holiday time, according to a local, it swells to over 10,000. I would pick a time outside holiday times if possible.
Merimbula is another top spot.
Regards, Bruce.

Hi Humff
May i suggest the
Park Beach Caravan
Park in
Coffs Harbour, its council run and is quite "resorty" but it is very close to coffs
creek which is very popular with kayakers and canoeists. It winds its way up to the Coffs CBD. The caravan
park is across the road from the very popular and patrolled
park beach, next to the mouth of the
creek. literally a 100m walk to the
creek, plenty of play areas if you have kids, BBQ areas and just a 5 min walk to the bowiling club. Great beach fishing or take a fishing charter out to sea and fish near the Solitary Island marine
park.
hope you have a great trip.

Hi, we stopped at the
Sawtell C/
Park near Coffs, it was a great
park and has a small inlet at the back, for canoeing etc, only a few Ks from Coffs , a lot cheaper and nicer ( we thought).
Have a great trip Cheers Des.

The coast will be very busy during school holidays but worth a try at Nelligen just inland from
Batemans Bay,
Diamond Head in Crowdy bay NP just south of
Laurieton, Valla
Park just north of Nambucca,
Sawtell and Broomes Head. Its a beautiful coastline and lots of people want to go there.
Cheers,
Val

Myall Lakes National Park near Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest would be good for kayaking and if you like NP type facilities.
But really suggest trying to avoid school holidays if you can.

If you go to the Australian Caravan
Park Reports site you can read reports of fellow travellers on most parks along your proposed route. A very handy site,
check it out. cheers...oldbaz.

Hi Humff,
As you are tenting I would presume you’ll have more money to spend on fuel so If I were in that position I would take a 3 month trip and call into every sea side town between Phillip Island and
Coffs harbour and really do the job properly, seeing as how I was retired so to speak. Actually retirement for me is any time between now and June.
In Vic check out Phillip Island it is a nice spot also
Lakes Entrance and as said in previous posts
Mallacoota,
In NSW there is Eden, Merinbula,
Batemans Bay,
Ulladulla and many beaches north to Woollongong, skip
Sydney unless you want to see it desperately.
Central Coast just above
Sydney, Port Stephens just above
Newcastle,
Diamond Head near
Laurieton,
North Haven, Port Macquarie, Crescent Head and then Do not miss
Hat Head near Kempsey for peace and quiet and an out of the way place,
South West Rocks, nearby and
Stuarts Point, just up the road from
South West Rocks.
We usually arrive in a town and hit the tourist info centres first up and then sort the wheat from the chaff back at the van.
Hell I might do the trip myself it sounds so good!
Cheers and best of luck in your retirement Humff.
Bruce.

IF you are serious about white
water kayaking, then the Kayaking
Camping Centre at
Nymboida, approx 40km SW of
Grafton, 100km NNW of
Coffs Harbour.
It exists purely for Kayaking enthusiasts

Forster/Tuncurry off the Pacific Hway near
Taree NSW is
well worth a visit. Oysters to die for! Lani's Holiday Island Caravan
Park in Forster is on the Lake and has a great
camping area on an island linked to the main
park by a causeway. It's tents only - lots of space and easy canoe/boat launching. It's
bush camping with all amenities! Over the bridge in Tuncurry The Great Lakes CP is on the Lake with sandy areas to easily pull up a canoe or boat.
It is a very pretty area and a good base for exploring surrounding country. Plenty of
places to explore by
water and great surf beaches too. Have a great time! Lynne

Big 4 at Palmers Island on the way into Yamba would be a good spot for you if you have kayaks. The river system has a boat launching ramp in the CP. Nice quiet
park ,plenty of space. Don't confuse with the Big 4 in Yamba itself.

Hi guys Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions, the only thing thats got my partner (Marly) worried is meeting up with the guy with the short shorts and the funny socks. Thanks for the warning Dazza. Love the look of that NSW coast line. When do the Christmas school holidays(2010 start in NSW Being Tasmanian I freak out when I see more than 20 people together A crowd down here is more than 5 people and rush hour is more than ten cars in a line
And a word of warning I have heard al the "2" headed tasmanian jokes anyone who posts one will get a piccie of my scar

Hi Humff,
Definitely make time for a stop at Jervis Bay. Heaps of spots to kayak and a gorgeous stretch of coast! Can recommend Huskisson White Sands Tourist
Park or National
Park camping at
Green Patch?
Closer to you is Eden and Twofold Bay Resort is a great place to stay. Kayaking in Twofold Bay also worth a go.
As suggested above, finding vacancies that time of year will be hard. I book at Huskisson at the end of each year for the following year.
By the way, I'm jealous!.....

hi one little place i would really recommend is
red rock. lovely grassy caravan
park with a very clean river adjacent and surf beach and the
red rock headland with sweeping
views north and south to
coffs harbour. it is also at the southern end of the yurigir national
park and has a lovely long boardwalk along the river, it is north of
coffs harbour and south of
grafton. would be lovely for kayaking. also
wooli, evans head and brinswick heads to the north are all lovely
places with rivers suitable for kayaking/fishing. hope this helps. pete and gail
