I understand Hergott Springs was the name originally given to Marree. According to the information contained in a previous thread I searched, Hergott Springs is about 4kms from the township of Marree, but in what direction?
Does anybody have a mud map or GPS co-ordinates for Hergott Springs? Is it accessible by AWD (not 4X4) and is it worth the effort in trying to find it?

Been to Marree quite a few times but have never bothered to look for the springs...next trip will be different.

Thanks in advance.

The Geoscience Aust website has this page for Hergott Springs:

Hergott Springs

It looks to be just north of the Marree Racecourse on Google Earth.

Hergott Springs was the original name for Marree which got its name in 1918 following ante German feeling. The spring is north of the town.

We asked in the main street of Marree - was sent round the back of the racecourse as I recall - its all dead flat terrain - claypan probably - the spring was simply (what appeared to be) a toxic algae infested pond when we visited..... historic nonetheless. Just picture the camels and the 'Ghans all those years ago ........

When you leave Marree on the Oodnadatta Track you will see a fenced 'race' on your right with a sign stating Hergott Springs

There is an old broken down windmill and a disused water trough.

The barman at the Maree pub knows a bit about it and he used to ride his motor bike out there. An ancestor of mine ran the station out there way back in time and I have been meaning to get a photo for my father of the area but I think your photo about sums the place up bar a few footings from the old homestead so will send that to my Dad as missions accomplished!!

If you head over to the Westprint maps site and grab a copy of the Oodnadatta map it comes with quite a good description and history of what you'll see on the track which includes an insight into Hergott Springs.......last time we were there it was quite a bit smaller than Willem's photo though.
