This family of five are touring Australia, it might help you make a decision.
We have had an Ultimate for seven years and it as been trouble free and reliable as. Easily maintained with plenty of storage that is easy to get at. We have had two jayco campers while the kids were growing up we only wish that Ultimates were around then.
They are comfortable, warm in winter, cool in summer and easy to put up.
Cook inside when the weather is bad or he flies are horrendous. Dust and water proof.
We have had ours on the harsher tracks and has never been a problem.
Storage is ok it fits neatly across the end of the garage.

Hi Cliffy,

I have recentley bought an Ultimate after having a tent top camper that was a PITA to set up .

If you take 15min to set an Ultimate up you are mucking around getting it level, of course the annex takes a bit longer.

Initially I was interested in the xtrk, but I am going away in June and the waiting period was nearly that long in October.

I ended up getting an '06 Elite with little use and heaps of options for a bit more than the xtrk family pack.

Have only used it a couple of times and nowhere too "extreme" , but the things I like about it are : build quality , it will go almost anywhere the Patrol will go , 3 way fridge makes you less reliant on 12v system lets you stay in one spot longer without genny/solar , the family can sit inside in bad weather in comfort.

Hope this helps,

Glenn.

We've had ours since February 1999 (11 years). That is longer than I've owned ANY of my motor vehicles...hahahaha

We've taken it to Cape york twice, across the Simpson Desert and many many other existing places.

We are a family of 5 (3 boys), the yougest of whom wasn't even born when we bought the camper. All of our sons have been thrown in at the deep end.....starting their camping "life" from the age of a couple of months.

I've never owned any other brand of camper trailer, so am probably biased....bought all I can say is that (IMHO) you won't find a better, stronger camper trailer.

I have an ultimate purchased second hand. I am sure you will be very happy with your choice.Mine is in the 500 serial number range.

The 3 Way Fridge will not work well if you are going to spend much time very hot climates. Many owners have changed to a Compressor Fridge and added a second battery.

Member Roachie is a long time Ultimate owner and I am sure he will respond to your post. He can give you a lot of good information on the Ultimate. There are several other Ultimate owners on the Forum who I am sure will also respond

Hi Bill

After I hit send, I saw you post appear. Thought you would be around soon.

I am doing OK. How is your retirement going? Any long trips planned this winter?

Here is a cut and paste from the Ultimate Forum today......

It's a September 2000 model and is in excellent condition with all the standard Ultimate features and many upgrades. It comes with the bed underlay, reading lights, sureflo water pump, Thetford toilet, front and rear awnings and a full annex with mesh sides.

New canvas was fitted in 2009 as well as a Waeco compressor fridge and 2 x 100AH AGM batteries.

Pictures can be viewed here:

I know that many Ultimate owners have friends who are interested in buying. Please pass on the information and ask them to contact me on 0409 561 214 or mcguckian at acer dot edu dot au

Price is $28,500

It is located in the Dandenongs, Melbourne.

Thanks

Peter

Sorry, the "Thomson Ultimate" was a link on the original thread, but it hasn't carried over to this website as a link.

If you are interested in the Ultimate, just respond here and I will pass it on. I have also alerted Peter Mc (the poster) to the fact that I am placing his thread on here....he is also an EO member, so may be along himself shortly to add some extra details....

Gaday Cliff. Don't own one but have travelled with several people that have. I've been looking closely at them & how they work as I'm currently building my own camper. The Ultimate has excellent suspension & clearance with build quality in the top 3 so would be ideal if you intend to head into rough remote offroad destinations. If you're not this camper is probably overkill & you're outlaying more money than you need to. The last fella who proudly showed me his unit boasted how it only takes 5 minutes to set up. Well not quite. Over 15 minutes later the basic tarps were up, but still a respectable time.
Campers come in a few different basic concepts. With the Ultimate, the kitchen is inside. This is a distinct advantage in poor weather or when avoiding insects etc but that leaves the cooking smells in the bedroom & means you need some other arrangements for quick lunch time stops. Personally I prefer the slide out type kitchens & quicker access to the fridge. You can get to it without opening the whole thing up but it's not as easy as some other systems. Dust on the rear step can be a major nuisance when opening up too.
One feature that is excellent & not available on most cheaper campers is the tropical roof which helps keep temperature extremes to a minimum.

Cheers Craig...................

thanks Craig, the kitchen inside doesn't worry me, we have a fridge in the car as well for lunch stuff, and I'm sure the more times you put it up and down the faster you will get.i was more interested in build quality over the years with hard use but by the sounds of it, it is not a problem, thanks again to all that have written in, if a good second hand one doesn't come up i think i will buy new, there is a big show next month in Vic, mark cliff

and all photos are on Photobucket here:

This camper belongs to our daughter's in-laws who used to travel regularly with us. We've had one since 2001 - no10 have taken it to many great places. Off to the Cape this year.

Happy to answer any questions.
