Hi Greendog
We have the original and it gives a better spread (and better quality although that is subjective) than any LED's I have tried and is the best light we have had. It does attract bugs though. I believe you can get a yellow filter to improve the bug problem but I haven't seen one used and don't know about the quality of the light with a filter.
Cheers

I have the yellow filter and the light output is dramatically reduced. Would not buy another filter of the same type.

In some places the bug problem is almost unbearable, I now prefer LEDs, a bit less light & a lot less bugs!

Hi Greendog
Good question. I have 3 Versa lights, the oldest 2 are 16 years old and have never let me down. I have tried others, but not a patch on the Versa light. I have read some very good reports on the new Versa light LED lights, claiming lower power consumption and a non blue light output from the LED's and from memory 6000 hours from the LED's. I have thought about the new LED lights, but have not purchased one. If you go for the LED type, please try it out and let us know one the forum your thoughts.

Cheers

I also have a Versa Light (actually the Piranha equivilent which is identical) and have also installed a yellow filter.
This has stopped the bug attraction but yes, it reduces the light output.

I use this over the cooking area of the camper annex and have a Evakool Torpedo light (a compact fluro) at the other end of the annex where bug attraction is not a problem.

I don't know anyone who has the LED Versa Light as they are a bit pricey at $159.

I also possess a 68 LED lamp which I used above the cooking area until one bank of LED's failed. Still OK but light output not as good as the Versa Light with filter.

As far as a light for inside the camper is concerned, I guess it depends on your requirements.
We only use the inside area when sleeping at night and have found a Coleman fluro lantern to be ideal. Runs on 8 "D" cell batteries and lasts for ages.
This lantern has two brightness settings plus a small yellow night light if required.

I scored an LED one for Christmas. I am very happy with it. It seems to draw very little power. As far as the spread of light goes I don't have much to compare it to as I used to run a gas light. The LED Versa-light lit up our camper kitchen easily as well as providing sufficient light to a broad area (20m?) of the camp so you didn't have to stagger about in the dark.

Sob, sob.... my 14 year old Versa lite dies on our last outing to Blaze's property. Not sure why, but it HAS had a hard life.

Still, it was a great light (flouro version), and I will be buying another when I get to the smoke next time.

Roachie.
Suggest you send it back to Versalighte, I sent the circuit board back to them and they sent me a new one( circuit board) free after 4 years of work but would suggest you try a new tube first,if it is circuit board and you had to buy one it would not be very dear, they look very simple.

I have both.
Versa Light with the bug insert . It is 15 years old and is better than the LED version that I have.
I now have the Led version hanging in my shed unused.
I recommend the original version.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

Hi, I have the yellow filter on my Versalite and it certainly reduces the number of insects but it also cuts back on the amount of light. Itis not feasable to remove or replace the filter easily so we tend to leave it in and only use that light when the insects are bad.
We have recently fitted LEDs to the inside of the camper and they are great - firstly because of the reduced power consumption and secondly because there is no interference with the am radio which is about all we can get in most remote places.
Hope this is helpful
Neil

I agree with earlier comments supporting the style fluro versalite although I have not seen the LED version in action. When insects are a problem we simply wrap yellow cellophane around the light and secure it using elastic bands. Rgds Alanc

Hi, we have had the Fluro ARB one which we bought from Toyota and we place it on a pole or in a tree far away from the camp site. It is exactly the same as the Versa, and is like a street light whent it is up high.

We once had 3 up around the camp site, and from a distance it looked like a small city.

Always get comments on how good it is, and we bought another one last weekend from ARB for $50 at the Caravan & Camping Show.

Because it is high up the bugs don't bother us, it's that good you can read a book under it. Other friends have said it's the best item they have bought, it draws 1 amp. We have small potable battery that we use to have it away from the camp site.

Cheers from Barra
