Help - Who made this bullbar

Our son just got himself a 100 series. It was purchased from a decestate and the executor did not have any idea about 4WD. Bull bar - whats that. Its legit. A ripper of a car.

So he now has to complete the setup.

He wants a winch and we are trying to see if the one on it is winch rated.

This is the best I can do for a photo.

Anyone know anything at all about it?

Phil

Looks like a factory Alloy bar, Member Richard W has one on his 100 Series and from his reports it twists badly when winching.

Sory Phil, It wasnt meant the way it sounded..... I realised after i posted.. I think the bolted on corners might indicate it is alloy.. Michael

Try sticking a magnet on it - a magnet will stick to a steel bar but not an alloy bar.

The Toyota badges make it look like the Toyota genuine bar - perhaps ask Toyota if their bars are rated for winches?

That's basic physics but who carries a magnet in their pocket. I have heaps for my model trains but he does not have one. The car is in Sydney and I am in Canberra. Bit hard now.

In any event this is a bit out of date. Matts getting a new steel one. It would be nice to be able to "close" a thread to save people wasting their valuable time.

Thanks Timbo.

It doesn't look quite like my factory alloy winch bar. Does have the toyota decals though, so maybe a variation?

Year dependant??

There would be a slight variation between some year models

A blind man on a galloping horse could see its alloy!! It appears to be made in 3 pieces, steel are generally 1 piece.. I cant say i have seen a 3 piece steel bar.. Michael

Thanks for the extremely constructive advice.

Gee it nice to meet friendly people.

Nope.
I have a Bocar bar on my Nissan. It looked identical to the factory-supplied Toyota alloy bars of the era, and this one in the pic doesn't look like a Bocar.
The Bocar had to be specified for use with a winch (if there was no cutout, it was not a winch bar). The winch bar has about 13mm-thick alloy frame inside the bar for the winch. Without that frame, I doubt that one could adapt it for a winch.

Phil,

In thread 76294 a few days ago the winch/no winch question was discussed. While there are times and places where a winch is good to have, most responses showed that most 4WDers very rarely, if ever, use them. They are an expensive, heavy bit of kit that your son, like many others, probably won't need for many years, maybe never. Think I'd be suggesting that better than having a winch might be to drive so as never to need it! Hate to think of the amount I've spent on fuel just to carry ours around for 20 years so we could use it once to get someone else out of trouble!

Cheers

John

Hi John

Understand entirely. We do not have plans to fit one at this stage either but then again after the two recent trips up into the hills with some club mates (you know them) I am wondering. Its lovely up there and the group would have been in trouble on both occasions without a winch.

I think it all comes down to what you want to do with the car. I have the distinct impression that (like father - like son) they are keen on travelling alone. My best drive would to be able to do both the Simpson and the Canning on our won. Yes This is where people say its a winch. But we would like to be prepared.

So I think after all the posts so far, Matthew would be best to get a new, all steel, one.

Appreciate your advice John

Okay all. Thank you very much for your responses.

Matt is off to Toyota to get their advice and will take it from there.

Knowing him (and of course his Mothers advice) he will no doubt visit the usual 4WD shops and get a good steel one.

Have a good weekend.

Phil,
Most dealers don't know to much about 4wds only about selling them. I'd be going to your local ARB or TJM store they will have a better idea about what you need.
Cheers Dave..

That's is always a worry. That's why you try and talk to the oldest bloke in the spares area. Definitely not a salesman. The local one I go to is also a keen 4wd adventurer (like that term??) and knows his stuff.

But Matt will no doubt go to the 4WD shops anyway. Even just to browse. Like we do!!!!!

Thanks for the reminder though.

Have a look underneath behind where the numberplate is Toyota bars have a model number and style sticker there.

Mine is the Toyota Estate bar and is the one with the blanks for Fog lights etc

Apparently IT can have a winch fitted but only with a special kit

That one looks like the cheaper model factory bar.

I was offered both when i bought mine s/h off a panel beater.

a winch bar would be very handy (and was for me) for when the front diff blows the C & P and you need to get your fourby out from where you are with only 2wd. i should know i've been there and done that.

Toyota have 2 designs for the 100 series. This one you have photographed is known as the "Alloy Cruiser Bull Bar". The one with the rolled sides as mentioned above is known as the "Alloy Estate Bull Bar'. Both have winch compatible variants.
Trust this clears up the situation.

Same as on my 2000 GXL 105 series . Ally factory fitted . It has a ID plate underneath.
3 peice construction. The rubber bits where they join up get a bit mishapen, when they get a bit old. Dont know if I would put a winch on it though.
Hope this helps

In 6 yrs of Artillery apart from instruction- in how to operate never used one in the next 6 yrs, with 6 WD there wasn't much need to use it, I would be wary in buying an ex-army vehicle with a winch, rusted out probably

The one pictured is the factory alloy toyota 'Cruiser Bar'. It is winch compatible. The black plastic cover underneath the number plate is where the winch cradle sits. The cover is used when there is no winch mounted to the bar. It's a updated design brought out about 2002 with the introduction of the turbo diesels and V8 IFS cruisers. I have the earlier design on a 1998 100 series which isn't winch compatible. Also the new one pictured has the small horizontal gap between the centre risers where the older one was a solid piece with no gap.
Hope it helps

It is a Toyota genuine bar made for them by a company called Rallyespeed.
This was available as well as the "estate bar" and most vehicles were fitted with the estate bar and that is why people think this other one was not genuine.
If you wish to use it for a winch you will need to have a winch cradle put in to take the strain.

As Kev said it looks identical to mine.
OEM Toyota Winch Bar.
It's had a few issues and if going for a winch bar again I'd go steel. Went for alloy because of the weight.
The winch has been used in anger both for myself and others.
