stockton beach family adventure

Hi everyone,
we are at nelson bay at the moment with the kids (3yo and 5yo girls) and the weather sucks!!!!

Id like to go for a drive along the beach but im not sure how long it takes or where to go, we dont have anyone else here with a 4wd that could come with us.

Im certain that there will be other people out there.........

i have a d40 navara and tow strap, shovel, air compressor, and some other basic stuff, so i should be ok, just not sure,m thats all.

any ideas or help would be appreciated.

regards, Justin. :)

We were there about a month ago and did some sand driving.

You can drive on Samurai beach without any permit, as we did. Be warned though it is clothing optional...... but is sounds like the weather would take care of any surprises.

Otherwise head down to Stockton Beach, you pass Samurai on the way, get a $10 permit at the BP on the right about 200m from the beach entrance. The permit lasts 3 days and is the cheapest one you can buy.

We has overcast weather when we were there but it was still lots of fun!

Murphy's law, the day no one is on the beach will be the day you need some one to help you out !!!! I have been to Stockon numerous times and twice without any other vehicles known to me. The only thing I didnt do those two times was go and have a play in the dunes way up the back, I wasnt game enough incase I got bogged and this was mainly due to having a 1 year old at the time (but this was on a weekend so a fair few people about) I imagine there would be a few fishermen out there throwing a line along the beach if you happened to get bogged down on the beach Im sure they would more then likely give you a hand if need be but they might not be there either !! I have never been bogged running along the bottom part of the beach (not in the water) but have been when in the back dunes hence why I wont risk going up the back without back up. Generally the rule is go in pairs or more when you are going out some where just incase you get yourself in trouble. If have never been on the sand before then I wouldnt risk it especially with children. Regards Steve

Debacle
Common sense prevails. You will not have a problem if use it. Go to Anna Bay Mobil and get a beach permit. From there head up past the turnoff to Birubi Surf Club and you will see a sign for 4wd beach entry on the left. Go in there about 100 metres and stop to let your tyres down to about 18psi. Having done that head straight ahead. You will see a number of tracks ahead of you, to start with do not take any that head off up the dunes to the right. About a kilometer ahead you will come to a point where a number of tracks converge and head off to the left to a break in the frontal dune and allow you access to the beachfront. You can either take that route or continue on behind the frontal dune. If you go out on the beach you are not allowed to turn left from that entry, in other words head up the beach to the right. There is quite a well used track inside the frontal dune, just be careful as you crest any hills that there is not a steep drop on the other side. As you go on you get more confident and might decide to follow some of the tracks up the dunes to your right. Main rules!!!- head straight up and straight down dunes, do not try and cut across them. Momentum is the key to getting up - take a good run up if necessary. It is always easier to follow an existing set of wheel tracks. Speed limit on the beach is 40kph.

Enjoy!!!

In addition to the excellent information provided already you can download this pdf with access points, emergency numbers & towing just in case there is no one around if you get bogged (unlikely if you follow the tips provided already).

Hyperlink did not work so just copy & paste the url. Also you can't get permits at Tomteland as mentioned in the pdf as its since closed down.

You'll have no problems on Stockton if you take it easy. I have a D40 and it loves Stockton beach. I actually had a battery go on me last time up there and there was plenty of friendly help avaiilable. Just do the right thing and use your own recovery gear if you need help. ... and don't forget to let your tyres down!

What an awesome day!!!!!!

Went to the BP at Anna Bay and picked up the pass for the beach, got to the front gate (the first sandy bit anyway) and let the tyres down to 18psi as instructed.

We cruised along the beach for a while to get used to it before hitting any of the dunes towards tin city (got a little bit bogged there, note to self, dont use the brakes in soft sand or let the clutch out too fast!!!!!!!!!!!).

Went up past the Sygna, the sand was very boggy there!!!! almost bogged the car there aswell.

We headed back towards anna bay but this time we got a bit more adventuress!!! the kids thought it was great, the wife was haning on for dear life and i had a ball driving up and down the dunes, following other tracks and making a few of our own.

We finally got back to Anna Bay BP servo and filled the tyres back up. THE GAUGE ON THE AIR HOSE IS WRONG, TAKE YOUR OWN GAUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again everyone who posted hints, the kept us from any trouble and miss happs.

we will be going back.

Cheers, Justin.
