G'day all

I'm currently planning a trip for my family to the Red Centre from Toowoomba in Jun/Jul 2010. I'm planning on leaving Longreach and heading directly west out thru Vergemont with the intention of going to Opalton.

My question is can I keep going west from Vergemont on to Mayneside Ruins or do I need to head Nth from Vergemont and then come down into Opalton from the Nth?

My Hema map says there isn't a track but there is one on Google maps as well as I have found this trip which suggests I can but it is a couple of yrs old now.

I wish to spend a night at Opalton and then come back down to Mayneside ruins, and then onto Lark Quarry before heading out thru Old Cork, thence Boulia.

Appreciate any comments,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

I drove down from Opalton to Jundah a couple of years ago and don't recall any side roads heading east that did not have large 'keep out' notices .

Daniel.
That is an interesting way to get to Opalton via Vergemont.

There will be a few washed out creek crossings this year, but patience and a shovel would get you through.

The track takes you right past the new Mayneside homestead, best if you call in, say g'day to Joan (Martyr) and put your moniker in her visitors book.

Instead of a camp at the Bush Park at Opalton, there is a good camp spot adjacent to the Mayne r. crossing coming from Mayneside and before you get to the gate. The river here has plenty of fish, yellowbelly and bream.

The road continuing west brings you back onto the main Winton road at Elvo.
Great country all through there, but watch out for the locals at Opalton. You could end up there for years enjoying a new lifestyle!

Thanks very much Furph!!

Is the track easy to follow or will I find myself wondering if I'm still on it? I wouls like to maybe go Longreach to Opalton via Vergemont & Mayneside, have a look around Opalton for a little while and then head north from Opalton up to 'Carisbrooke Station'. This would all be in one day... doable or not?

The next day would be Carisbrooke Station to Lark Quarry, then to Old Cork and then onto Boulia if daylight permits or I may just camp up off the road somewhere!

I assume that you are familiar with this area so was wondering what you think of this plan.

Appreciate your comments,

Daniel
