Simpson Desert Fuel

Interested to receive some feedback on the quantity of DIESEL used when travelling the Simpson from East to West. We will be travelling in a 2003 Toyota Hilux twin cab.

According to the Fuel Trek Data and based on the usage of 20 travellers a 4 cylinder diesel uses an average of 6.29 Km/L during Simpson travel.

How much you will use will simply depend on how far you drive.

Hi. I've just translated John's figure, and it is 15.9 litres per 100 km. Depending on conditions, I'd factor in a decent margin over that figure, and assume at least 20l if the going is soft, etc.

The figures are based on the average of 20 different 4 cylinder diesels on different days, months and years and the actual fuel they have listed in the Fuel Trek notes.
Yes its also an average of 15.9 L/per 100km's thats displayed in the link I provided also.

Its obviously a guide to help the user plan the likely usage and answers his original question which was "quantity of Diesel used".

I'm sure the poster will factor in a safety margin to suit and given the Fuel Trek notes also provide detail on how much was actually carried by the respective traveller it will also help him work out a safety margin.

Our trip was in 2004 in a 100 Series TD Landcruiser towing a camper trailer.

In the actual SD we were down to 14.5kph average and getting 26ltr p/100k

There are a number of factors in determining what is needed. So that you know what my comments are based on, here is the route and the vehicle.
Prado 3ltr not D4D.
West to east.
Using the WAA line.
Forced to deviate at Eyre Creek - +80 km
Coming from Oonadatta, finished Birdsville.
Diesel = 150 ltrs
= 20 per 100 kms
Had 180 ltrs in the tanks + 40 ltrs in jerries. Put in the jerries at Dalhousie.

Hope that this is useful.

I would agree with the 16 - 20 litres per 100 k already suggested. Plan on using 20 but you likely will average about 16 from Birdsville to Mount Dare. Allow a margin of at least 25% or better 50% on top of that. You do have to keep an eye on the total distance and possible or likely detours. Also going East to West no fuel before Mount Dare. So there is a bit of travel after the Simpson before refuelling. I know it sounds obvious to allow for that extra distance but some people don't.
