Hi,
Another of my 2wd access questions. I was wondering if anybody has gone into the Palm Valley camp site in 2WD. I'll be driving Falcon Station wagon with a ultimate camper trailer. I have seen conflicting reports, I guess it depends on the previous wet season as I gather you have to go through river several times. Is it possible to do it with this car or I need 4wd?
Thanks

I last went there in 1985. in a Subaru Touring wagon. The road roughly follows the Fink River. It was rough in places but negotiable if you took it easy. Lots of river stones but I followed the 4X4 coach tracks and only got stuck once, while traversing a sandy bank on one of the river bends. Don't know what it is like now though. Check with the Police tation at the turn off at Hamondsburge.
Cheers Steve.B....

See thread 76280 which discussed the same question a month or so ago. The answer was an overall no, with sandy spots being the main problem.

Thanks for the info. I have seen the old post, but I think I will give it a miss, Falcon is a large car with lots of back overhang and it is a heavy beast too, not like VW (even though I carry a hand winch), but I am stressed for time, so I will give Palm Valley a miss and instead take the Namatjira drive and go to Redbank Gorge (I be arriving from Kings canyon). One day when I get a 4WD I be back :-).
Thanks

Hi LER, don't miss Palm Valley, read my blog to get a touchy feely viewpoint. IMO it's not the sand on the 22km track into it but the several rock ledges. Read the info in Places under Palm Valley - there's two so check both!
Also Redbank Gorge has only pit toilets but Ormiston Gorge has flush AND hot showers. SWMBO will love you !!!... W

I would not take a 2wd falcon sw to Palm Valley, I was there last year with a LC. The track varied from average to very rocky and soft sand patches. You are bound to do some damage to the falcon, being lower to the ground and towing a camper. Hope this helps. Cheers

Bit of a pity - the Ultimate would eat up such terrain, but the tow vehicle would end up damaged IMV.
These coords (if you can have a look on Google Earth) are where the problems arise for standard clearance vehicles...... at the end of the maintained road from Hermannsberg, into the bed of the Finke.
24° 0'31.27"S 132°46'10.29"E

Re the route down the Finke.......
Depending on the nature of the last flood, the river base might be stoney and very firm...... could have soft sections though.

Down at the following coords is where the river track exits to another maintained road into the campground, and beyond to the actual Valley parking area.
24° 3'17.07"S 132°45'41.41"E
As I recall, it's quite lumpy on the way to the campground - after that it gets very lumpy. Underside damage would probably be severe.

The Falcon will get sutck in soft sand. I wouldn't try it unless you didn't like your car and were going in with a 4wd who could tow you out when you get stuck.

The Fink is in flood at the moment it is about 20k wide in palm valley so the road will be a hole new story when the flood passes. Eric

We got in and out of there in a 2008 model Holden Astra with a boot full of luggage and 5 people.

Soft sand in some areas...expect a bit of a polish on the underbody but keep the momentum up and you should be right.

In the other sections.....take it easy. It gets pretty twisty and we often found at least one of our wheels dangling in mid air.

As for the last jump up to the parking area....for get it. There were 4x4's with lift kits scrapping their rock sliders to get over that one.Park the car and walk the last 200 metres in.

Not being a member, I can't post pix on here but if you look at this link, it'll show you our Astra at the point just before the final jump up to the parking area.

Now if there is water in there....don't even try it. I've seen videos on youtube of many "super trucks" getting stuck in there. It's not what you drive but how you drive that governs your limitations.

Forgot to add...we were there in August 2009. The road changes every season and this season will be even more of a change due to the water flowing through there ATM.

Definatley worth a look though. It's absolutley breathtakingly beautiful.

The camper will be your achelies heel (sorry about the spelling).

Pretty good efford with a front wheel drive, I would never dare with a front wheel drive, but then again five people can do wonders with a small car.
