Cheap 3 way fridges and how to use them

We just bought a 35L cheapie 3 way to supplement the 80L compressor fridge.

Sure, they're bloody near useless at 30 Celsius or more. At these temps we will add Ice Bricks from the Fridge (freezer section) to keep things cold.

On their own, useless in hot weather, but for most of the time they can be most useful.

Jim.

but you forget to add his fridge will start when he charges the battery ...
You on the other hand have to drive however far it is to refill your gas bottle again, in the Kimberley it's a days drive to anywhere ha ha

Simple choice is to use a compressor fridge and recharge the battery :) :) :)

A full 9kg bottle will run the 3 way for 2 weeks without any fuss...so it doesn't matter how remote you are if your bottle is full.

I used to live in (the worlds most liveable city) Melbourne for 17 yrs, I left for what I thought was going to be a 12 month trip round Aussie, arrived in West Aussie and have not really left other than go up to Kakadu and various Northern Territory areas.
I was amazed at the numbers of 'oll grey nomads' just living on deserted beaches for months at a time, so I joined the grey empire.

What I'm saying is over here in WA, people spend many months camped in one place, many rely on solar power so they don't have to run out of gas every two weeks :)

Well I know Jimbo comes from Victoria so sure there will be hot days but not like hot months on end like north of NSW so I reckon it's a great idea.

When the winter days are cool and the sun is gone, turn on the gas to the 3 way until the sun comes out.

Of course Jimbo did the logic.

Solar panel in overcast weather on 80L fridge waiting for days for the sun to come out = warm beer.

Gas bottle attached to 3 way fridge waiting days for the sun to come out before putting solar panels out for compressor fridge = cold beer.

you said it in your first line - "comes from Victoria"
'comes from Victoria' is not the same as 'living in Victoria'

Victoria is a gr8 place to come from...
'living' is what you do in WA & NT & FNQ

(said as an ex Melbournian)

Jimbo not only comes from Victoria, he went to FNQ for eight years and came straight back to the "World's Most Liveable City".

Hi Jim,

My father gave me his old 3 way fridge and I used it before I brought my Bushman.
I have since used it as well as the compressor fridge.

I have used it as a freezer, freezing every thing down then sticking it in the 3 way, worked well that way but my trips are winter ones, so ambient temps. not that high.

That worked well but I had to run it on gas overnight so the battery in the car didnt go flat.
Also they are also more efficent that way.

Have also used it as a every day fridge, using it to store drinks and food for the days journey so that we didnt have to go to the main fridge all the time.
Hoping that all makes sense.

Cheers,
William

G'day Jim, as a long time user of the faithful old Finch 3 way, I can offer the following. Stating the bleedin obvious....if possible load only cold stuff. 12v
performance is directly related to the size of wiring. Contrary to a lot of opinion,
12v is good if this is corrected. Many are underwired at manufacture, & cig plug
is a waste of time. Gas is the forte of the 3 way, will run a long time on gas...
mine still freezes if not adjusted correctly but battled a bit at 45 deg in the
Bungles but was still cool. Never had a problem with 240 operation. The usual
stuff about levelling, keeping in shade etc apply. Hope it serves you well...oldbaz.

I think one of the main failings with the cheapie 3 ways is they are somewhat poorly insulated. I've never cut one up to see, but I would imagine that the casing insulation isn't anything special, its just polystyrene sheeting.

AND if it has not got a computer fan or two pointing at the fins and connected to the 12v, then add one or two.
