We stayed at Warren Gorge, Chambers Gorge and Aroona Homestead over Easter 2009 and they were great places. They are all designated camping places and have toilets (not Chambers though) and very minimal water.

There aren't too many official free camping areas. They are either national park or private land. In the south there is Warren Gorge, near Quorn. In the middle there is Parachilna Gorge. I can't remember the name of it but it's about half way between Blinman and Arkaroola on the back road. They're the only 3 I can think of.

It's only about $10 a night to stay in a NP. If you want to stay long term I would suggest getting a national parks pass for about $130 which will let you camp in any SA NP for as many nights as you want for a whole year.

If you only wanted to roll the swag out for a night or two, well it wouldn't be hard to find a quiet spot where nobody will find you. But I didn't tell you that.

Mt Chambers gorge half way between Blinman and Arkaroola. It's a nice little spot, I don't think it's an official camp site though but who will care if you a quiet? It's not very nice during summer. Don't expect to find much water though and there are no services at all, not even a long drop.

Hi Barnesy

When we visited in 2006, there were several designated camping sites at Mt Chambers Gorge. A notice board at the start of the gorge shows where each one is.

Hi Shane

There are several nice camp grounds in Brachina Gorge. Pit toilets provided. Not sure if park entry or any other fees apply. There are also campgrounds in the Gammon Ranges but track in is a bit narrow for caravans (especially if you meet someone on it). Check the SA parks website.

Thanks for all the replies, I could not say before but was having a little bet with my mate who said its just about stuffed for free camping in and around the flinders and Gammon ranges. He found that the free camp book was no good as the council had gone and closed what was listed.( his words not mine)
I have no problem paying for park camp sites, and will be when im there in July.
Still hoping to go to Innamincka via the bore track.

cheers Shane.

Gday Shane,
Free camping is allowed within 50 metres of the Public Access Routes (PARs). The following link will give you the full list of South Australian PARs and details of where you can camp.

I'll second the suggestion of Chambers Gorge. Its a favourite stop of ours on the way home from further north.
