Hi there,
I am looking for some advice on good place to stay whilst travelling between Coober Pedy and Erldunda for an overnight stay. I have a big caravan in tow also.

After that we were looking at maybe taking the van to Uluru and then onto Kings Canyon, then onto Alice springs. any advice on where to stay or if i should leave the van somewhere else?

Thanks

Would love to know who I am giving advice to.

But Coober Pedy to Erldunda is 488 Kms and drivable in one day (just over 6 hours @ 80kmh). There is not too much out there butMarla is about half way. Marla caravan park click here

Yulara at Uluru has a camping ground with power, Yulara resort click here

The roads to Kings Canyon are not very pretty at the moment so you may need local advise, I suggest when you contact Yulara for the camp site ask about getting to Kings canyon.

I would also suggest that you look at staying at Curtin Springs Cutrin Springs Click here as an alternative...

Good luck

Hi No Name

Can't help you with the Stuart Highway as we came from Alice Springs through the West MacDonnells. We stayed at Palm Valley three nights (4wd only access track), Kings Canyon Resort CP (2 days)which was a nice camp ground and Yulara Resort CP (three days) which enabled us to do the walks at each place. My Blogs on this section are dated 2008.

We stayed at Cadney Park with no complaints. Good showers and a good meal in the retaurant/pub.

Again the No Name thing is a bit odd.

To be honest most of the time the staff at Yulara don't know most of the road conditions unless you ask at the Mobil petrol station but they deal more with the main roads and may NOT have the information you need.

My advice would be to make the 100 km journey from Yulara back to Curtin Springs and stop in there, ask them about the roads out to the Canyon - they will have the most up to date information available as they supply the information to the tour bus drivers as they go steaming through.
On top of that if the road isn't passable Curtin Springs offers free camping near to the homestead.

If you go out to Kings Canyon you can camp at Kings Creek Station, I don't know the costs there but you've then got access to power/water/amenities etc.. and probably a better price than at the resort.

You'll find that anywhere the tour buses stop the information is relevant and recent..

Good luck.

hahah, good one Hairy.

Yeah, that's a Mad Max reference.. after all, he was a cop to start with, hahah.

The wrist is bleep ing me off, still aches on occasions, possibly caused by the cast now, I just don't understand why I still have to wear a cast, hehe.

Time for a beer mate?

As Cityslicker above says, Cadney Park Station Roadhouse has a great C/P and a sensational Restaurant and amenities.Has all fuels including LPG.Image Could Not Be Found

Many Caravaners stay at Curtain Springs Station Roadhouse (80 k's) before Ayers Rock. You only pay for a powered site, free if no power required, and campfire allowed. Basic showers and toilets, but they do the job. Has all fuels including LPG. Image Could Not Be Found Image Could Not Be Found

Gday,
Coober - Marla 233km with Cadney in between (Cadney is my usual stop over as its a good pub, nice pool and clean rooms, but hardly a days drive from Coober?)
Marla - Erldunda 230 kmKulgera in between not a bad pub, caravan sites and cabins, but still hardly a days drive?)
Personaly I would drive from Coober Pedy to Curtain Springs......any easy days drive, good pub and I think its still free camping.

The Rock to the Canyon is all bitumen but the Canyon to Alice via Ernest Giles road is about 100km of dirt and not recommended for vans at the best of times (quite do able but not recommended!) At the moment it is completely impassable! (some idiots had to be rescued down there last week who become bogged to the arse.
You just need to back track to Lasserter Highway and back up the Stuart Highway.

Cheers
Hairy
