We are looking at going to Carnarvon and then onto Gascoyne Junction and Tom Price via Mount Augustus in a couple of weeks. Can any one tell me what the roads are like / accommodation and fuel supply I will be driving a 4.5 petrol Patrol.

Thanks Paw.

Hi Paw,

The roads are pretty good. In 2008 I came down from Tom Price, onto the gravel at Ashburton Downs Road, Ashburton Downs Meekatharra Road, Pingandy Road and Dooley Downs Road into Mt. Augustus Station. We got food and accommodation that time however I believe the situation may have changed there. All those roads are good and maintained.

From there we headed west along the Cobra Mount Augustus Road, Cobra Gifford Creek Road and then Ullawarra Road. This road goes towards Gascoyne Junction and this and the other roads were in good condition.

At Mount Sandiman Station I headed across the top of the Kennedy Ranges, a bit more caution is necessary on that route, before arriving at the Junction.

Accommodation is available at Cobra Station I believe.

Cheers
Alan

Yep the van site at Cobra is still available. BTW showers for a passers-by was $5, but well worth it.

Hi Paw…………We did a similar trip in 2008 but from Mullewa to Mt Augustus then on to Carnarvon…………Petrol at Gascoyne Junction was $2.07ltr at the time……..At Cobra Station most things were all $2.00 the coke the ice cream etc, if you are taking a tent take a rake with you as the camp ground looked very rough with lots of small rocks……………..Mount Augustus was great with a good Park and the Manager was very friendly, Petrol was $1.95ltr, We were in a LC 100 series with an off road van and found the roads to be in reasonable condition all the way………….have a safe trip.

Was out that way just after Easter. Dooley Downs Pingandy Rd is very fast with few corrugations. Huge bull dust patch just outside of the Mt Augustus "Resort" as they are doing road works. Be carefull on some of the bends as they come up fast and can be sharp. Read the signs.

Didn't go as far as the Ashburton Rd but last year it was beauty with few corrugations.

Both these tracks have floodways and dips. The dips were more problamatic than the floodways so slow down when approaching. Also watch out for teh occassional washaway.

If the rains come the track could be chopped up fast and even closed.

Cobra to Mt Augustus is flat as a tack and you might find a corrugation hidden somewhere. Fuel is available at Cobra from drums, phone ahead to make sure $1.90 or $2.00 per litre regardless of type. Prices fluctuate at will. Also the guys with diesels complained of possible dirty fuel I have ULP so can't confirm might of been bad luck as 11 vehicles were filled with diesel, so maybe a bad drum????

Drive to the conditions and have a ball. take the camera as the scenery is spectacular. BTW if you're using a GPS and moving maps the roads in that area have been diverted so don't be overly concerned if your curser starts to deviate of the GPS map line.

I read a report a month or so ago that Mt Augustas Resort had closed but could open again under new management, can you confirm.

Bob the place looked pretty deserted except for workers vans. Definitely no signs of tourist's or that tourists would be welcome. The Resort signs still up though on the road in and out though. Give Gascoyne Shire a call they should be able to advise on their status.
