Hi All

Hope I'm doing the right thing as new to this site and membership.

We have purchased a Hema 5 GPS and have a laptop we will be taking with us on our adventures. Not being ultra techo savvy I wanted to know if the Hema comes with Ozi Explorer maps do I have to purchase Ozi Explorer software for the laptop to be able to play around with our routes then uploade them into the Hema?

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi Melanie,

The Hema Navigator uses OziExplorerCE while a Laptop runs on OziExplorer.
They are two different software versions.

OziExplorer costs around $130 but that is a one off cost and entitles you to free upgrades as they are released.

Now for some good news.
The maps that come with the Hema Navigator are definitely suitable to load onto your laptop. You simply load the supplied CD/DVD and install the maps into the Maps sub directory. This will be C:\OziExplorer\Maps if using the default installation setup and any Routes and Waypoints created and saved will be in C:\OziExplorer\Data. These can then be copied to the Data directory on the Hema and loaded for use.

Maps supplied include the Natmap series of Australia wide maps, plus a range of Hema maps including the Great Desert series. In fact, all the maps you will need.

Good luck and enjoy the Hema. They are a great unit when running OziExplorer.

Hi
Yes Hema comes with series of maps (and a DVD) that work both on the unit (OziExplorerCe) and on the PC (OziExplorer).

There is a demo and trial version of OziExplorer you can download for free but both have limitations which you may find frustrating.

The Shareware/Demo version is missing many features that you get in the full purchased version, but it does allow full communication with the GPS for upload/download and moving map.
o Only allows maps in BMP image format to be loaded
o Only loads maps in WGS84 datum

The Trial Version has almost all the features of the full version (works with all supported image formats and datums) but with these limitations
o No communication with the GPS for upload/download
o No saving or loading of Waypoints, Events, Tracks etc
o No saving of map as an image file
o Will close down after 1 hour of running (must be restarted)

I suppose try the demo and trial and see if they do what you need, if they dont then you may have to buy the full version to get all features in one.

Cheers

PS ..Hema Navigator doesnt communicate with PC version of OziExplorer (registered or unregistrersd versions) - you have to use windows explorer to cut/copy and paste data to and from unit/sd card either via ActiveSync or SD card reader.
