Hi Folks
I'm considering removing the fibreglass aerial from the bullbar and fitting a smaller aerial in the aluminium wind deflector on the front of the roof rack. The wind deflector sits at about 45 degrees, and although I can adjust the aerial to be vertical, I don't know if it's critical for the ground plane material to be horizontal?
Any thoughts welcome.
Thanks
Waz

Just use a small Aerial like a Mobile one CD470 2.1 Db Ground Independant

It can be important Waz, put your eye at the centre position of the proposed aerial and if you can't see the horizon past the wind deflector, then its a problem.
Would it be possible to pop-rivet a small bracket at the top of the wind deflector such that you have a flat surface to mount a cheap $15 1/4 whip on.
This will work
well , ideally the flat surface would be 15cm across but even 5cm will give acceptable results compared to the radiation pattern distortion one gets from bullbar mounts.

You won't get decent coverage unless you use a Ground-independant antenna, but these will be at least 30 cm high.
You might be better off getting a high antenna that mounts off the mudguard.

Thanks Mike.
I'm moving it up and back because I've put a couple of spots on the roof to light up the roadside and the aerial bounces the light back.

Why not put a sleeve of heat-shrink (black) over the existing antenna ??

It will detune the antenna - I'm not sure by how much.

Waz,
it looks like your antenna is a 1.2m GME AE4705. This antenna is available in
grey as
well as white.
Have you considered changing it to
grey to overcome your problem? It would suit your vehicle, also being a shade of
grey.
Cheers,
Dion.
