uhf radio

I've been looking at some remote head radios and the Uniden 015SX has VOX hands free capability ( $79 extra )

Has anybody used a hands free setup or is it a bit of a gimmick ??

Or am I better off going with a GME 3420 and get better (??? ) quality...

Thanks for any input ..

Hi Gronk

The VOX capability is a handy option on say a motorbike or quad , something where you dont allways have a free hand. In a car probablly a waste of space.

Uniden and Gme are much the same quality but for my money ICOM leave them both for dead. Also much easier to programme any specific functions in 400 pro Icom than the other two.

Cheers Teza

Please don't buy a Uniden, I hate listening to people who are using them

GME much better.

We use Icoms for in vehicle and GME for hand helds.

95% of Uniden radios have very poor audio transmit, they are muffled and distorted.

You can always pick a Uniden for this reason.

Why do you think anyone who needs a radio for work like earthmoving always stipulate;at or buys GME.

Another thing if you ever get the chance have a look inside a Uniden and compare it to a GME or Icom.

Olcoolone is spot on.Most Unidens have distinctive muffled / hollow transmit audio. Some also seem to amplify any background noise instead of cancelling it out.I work for a company with a fleet of 60 trucks and you can pick the ones with Unidens straight away.

I have a 3420 GME, i think the quality is good but complex in operation.. There are many extra features that not many people would use and the squelch is located on a push button and fiddly.. Squelch should be on a rotary knob so you can adjust it without looking down to the display panel .. it doesn't make sense.. Michael.

I've heard the same complaints about squelch from people with other GME's as well....but as I need a remote head ( no room to mount a normal size ), there are only 2 choices...the Uniden or the GME.....

I rang GME about the squelch adjustment and the reply was...why do you need to adjust it for, it already comes with it adjusted to the best position .......?????

Gronk!! It is adjusted to a setting of 2 I think,, out of 10.. so after a while of driving along with the squelch breaking in and out all the time, you simply turn it of because of the noise. If you set it too high, you hear nothing until you can see others coming. Its a pain but ther GME 3420 is very compact, i have the main unit which is very small, mounted under the dash on the passengers side. Many people say the output is clearer than the Unidens but I cannot say from experience. Michael
