We are in Horsham Victoria, and will be travelling the Canning Stock Route leaving early July. Have looked on ebay to buy a phone, but don't know enough about using one to risk purchasing one. When we go on our trip, we will be heading North through Mildura then north before cutting across to Yunta. But we are flexible.

Hi John, if suzannerobin can't organise the sat phone with you return mail me as I've booked a sat phone but it's dammed expensive to rent. I need one from the 20th June to about the 25th July, but could mail it back to you on the 15th of July when we'll be back on the Stuart black top heading back to Sydney. What sort of rent for say 20th/6 to 25th/7 or 20th/6 to 15th/ July. Thanks Greg

Perth Company called Fastwave rent them out 08 9486 4256 but you better be quick as they told me they are popular in the winter months for obvious reasons. Greg

Hardly get the rebate for use on one trip.

Requirement is out of ALL phone communication for at least 120 days a year.

Very hard to do with all the others having towers near their communities

Also mines have access in the strangest of places

Personally I would buy one thats not too old off Ebay as you will probably get your money back when you sell it.

Either way you have to learn how to use it as hiring one doesnt make it any easier

Thanks to you all for your suggestions, advice and ideas. We still are not sure what to do, but will look on ebay for a bit to see what happens. Apparently there are good brands and not so good. Set up costs are so unknown if we buy.. so many decisions. At thi stage I will not make a committment but will wait and see. Our trip will be from early July to about mid Sept. Cheers.

Don't know where you are headed but the Oodnadata and Birdsville police stations hire them out. The desert parks site has info on sat phones to hire when in this region.

It seems taht $10 per day is about normal, plus calls that are not cheap. I think the cost of calls is cheaper if people ring in, rather than us ring out. Any clues on this?

If you use a TELSTRA sim card (on a plan) not prepaid

Calls BOTH WAYS cost $3.77 a minute

My only call cost exactly that in November

HAve seen hire rates of $17 a day. Hire it fo 2 months and you could have bought one.
