NT river guru's help please

Hi All

We are going to go to Kakadu on the weekend and have a look at the upstream section of the east alligator, anyone know if we will be able to get up very far? We are in a Hornet Trophy, so too heavy to lift around but it doesn’t draw much water. How high does the tide have to be to push water back up the river? Even if we can’t get the boat in we’ve heard it’s good for a swim there at the moment!!!
Also thinking of going to Yellow waters and putting the boat in there, anything we need to know apart from there are lots of big crocs.
Thanks Lyndon & Bernadette

Hi Lyndon & Bernadette

The local boat trip we took last year can not go very far upstream due to a blockage caused by a cyclone a few years ago. Prior to that they could take the boat to the escarpment. It may well stop any boat if nothing has changed.

They say that the East Alligator has more crocs than any other river in the world apart from the Nile. It's teaming with big ones too.

Hello Lyndon & Bernadette
We have just been there a week and a half ago - there are plenty of crocs in the river. We went on the local Gungurul boat tour. They have a local aboriginal guide who said that as the water recedes from the plains, the crocs recede with it and in 3 or 4 weeks time (a week and a half ago) there will be hundreds of crocs...
Oh... and being eaten by a Ginga isn't the only way to come to grief on the East Alligator...

Sorry Lyndon & Bernadette,
Forgot to add that we also went to Yellow Waters... The boat ramp and public access at Gagadju (Cooinda) is closed due to flooding. However we did see a couple of boats fishing - so there is access somewhere - but I don't know where...

Hi,

We were there about a week ago for the same reason, just for a bit of look and some fishing. Just had a quick look at the GPS track and we went up
8.4 km from the ramp. We could not go any further due to a very shallow sandbar right across. We were in a 4.5m Sea Jay with a 60hp. Very shallow in some sections and lots of snags. Last few k's were hard going but the water is quite clear. Caught some nice barra (swampies though) on soft plastics.

Have a good long weekend.

Hi All
Thanks for all the reply’s. Hopefully the Croc’s won’t be to friendly! If we catch a fish it will be a bonus, just happy to see some new country.
Cheers Lyndon
