Hi Everyone,
We are looking at travelling to
Darwin next year. We are heading off from
Brisbane on to
Longreach and then onto the Territory. We are travelling with two other families and were planning on leaving on Good friday (end of April) but I have now been advised that that mightn't be the best time to leave due to rain etc and maybe we should leave at a later date? Am open to any ideas and suggestions of when is a good time to leave. We are going away for 6 weeks and have it all mapped out already. Thanks in advance.
Katrina

It will still be a bit muggy then, and this year the wet season did not finish till the end of May. That is a little unusual though, July/August would be the preferred time. I lived there in the late 70's early 80's went back about seven years ago at the end of June and found it a little warm, probably just old age hahahaha. Hope that is of some help.

You may find that some
places you want to see eg in
Kakadu will still be closed at least until late May, depending on the Wet. We reached
Cape Crawford in mid May two years ago and roads up north were just starting to open. This year was wetter. So you should probably leave a bit later if possible as you only have 6 weeks and can't wait around too long.
Also
Easter could be a bad time to travel with lots of traffic and crowds. eg
Longreach is a popular school holiday destination. You would have to book
well ahead and do a bit of queueing. Have a great trip. Lynne

It really depends on the nature of the next Wet Season. Some years, the rain is
well over by late April; occasional years there is a late cyclone or tropical low that brings late rain and floods.
2005 - even the Gulf Track was open by early April. 2006 - was cyclone late April - bitumen roads still mostly open, though. So - it can vary hugely from year to year.
I tend to favour going when you planned to - but maybe book in advance for
places you want to stay over the
Easter break. You will be early enough into the Top End to still see it green and the wetlands extensive - at its best. Waterfalls should be good. You will be ahead of the worst of the crowds. It could still be a bit humid - but probably no worse than
Brisbane.
