On Sunday night I got an Email from TOM TOM offering a new map update system for $85 approx for a new map and a years updates.

This being a good price I took the offer as their maps have been $135 per quarter.

TODAY I get another email offering the same thing BUT WITH 18 MONTHS maps for the same price as I paid.

I rang them to protest at their marketing tactics but was met with a firm refusal.

I realise if you buy in a shop on Friday and they have a sale on Saturday its your bad but this is a ripoff if ever there was one.

No wonder people dont trust companies any more if this is the way they treat customers.

What do others think and if you agree please let Tomtom know as well.

I got the 18 month email this morning but don't think I ever received the 12 month one. What is the difference between the maps that you pay for and the maps that it updates with for free when you connect to TomTom Home?

The free downloads are just that what they have improved in the version you have.

Like microsoft updates.

A "New updated" map comes out every quarter and is like you have ver 4.8.25 and it renews as 5.0.3 or such.

The New maps were $135 and now are $12.50.

Probably because no one would pay the money every 3 months.

The prev email came from Tom Tom international and had the offer already on it

It was originally sent to me last week but I was away till Sunday and got it when i came home so the offer was a week old.

Now Tom Tom AU are offering an "Introductory offer" that has been available for a week.

Dont know why I get mail from both.

Off course if you use a Jailbroken Iphone you don't have to pay for the maps, I don't mind paying as I see value in the Tom Tom product and service. I love the convenience of one device that does all.

I received the Email on the 18th June offering an extra 6 months.

It also has a message on TomTom home when I connected it to my PC.

For $99 you got the latest update map and quarterly update for the next 18 months

Cheers,
John

Strange as they said it was only sent today.

The Original mail I got was from TOM TOM Europe.
Wish they would be consistent.

Gave them a miss from the start when we were having trouble connecting to the device from the PC. Their help desk was useless always passing us on. Played for a while and eventually got the PC to recognise the TomTom.

So no updates and its never bothered us. If you expect an error and one comes up then its not a hassle.

Besides what good is it the Toyota. It never "goes to town unless to be worked on or for fuel. You can feel it shuddering at the traffic when you get close. Just joking.

Its like a lot of things these days. The initial purchase is very attractive to "get you in". And then crunches (note the plural tense) come later and for as long as they can keep you hooked. All basically the same.

Cheers

You shouldnt have that trouble.

Download latest version of Tom Tom Home and install it Connect your GPS to the PC, turn it on and open Tom Tom Home it will put a message on the GPS screen asking if you want to connect to computer touch yes and you are away.

It will automatically search for the updates available.

Well thats how mine does it on both the lappys and my new Windoze 7 machine.

Thanks but no thanks. Its not needed anyway. It doesn't have the CSR on it anyway.

Its flat and left in the bedside table. Right next to my mobile phone.

Hi Graham

I have been ignoring Tomtom emails since I bought mine. Got the 18 month offer today. Had to look in the deleted items folder of my email after reading this thread, as I always ignore them, due to excessive (in my opinion) prices. Straight in the garbage with the Viagra offers...lol. Sounds like you have been ripped off badly though.

Cheers

Dave

I got this yesterday,,,,,,

Dear customer,

Because roads change so much every year, TomTom likes to make it really easy and affordable for customers to use the most accurate and reliable map available.

TomTom’s new Map Update Service gives you every single release of your map over a fixed period (four new maps per calendar year), from the equivalent of just AUD $12.45 every three months (note that there may be a small charge to update your map to the latest map to take advantage of this offer).

Our new Map Update Service will ensure you will always drive with the latest Map for an unbeatable price.

Special introductory offer on Map Update Service (Bonus 6 months)

Buy 12 months of TomTom Map Update Service and we’ll give you a bonus six months.

That means you can:
Get 18 months for the price of 12 months
Receive six brand new maps instead of four, one per quarter

You will need the latest version of your map to get started. Need to upgrade? We’ll provide the most up-to-date version at a reduced price based on the age of your map.

Example of Map Update Service for the map of Australia.

Click the button below, then connect your device to TomTom HOME and follow the instructions.

Get Map Update Service

This offer is only available until 20 July 2010.

All the best,

The TomTom team

*Map Update Service only applies to maps already installed on your device.

Map Update Service prices vary depending on the map you currently have installed on your device. To start using the service you need to upgrade to the latest version of your map. If you don’t have the latest version we will provide it at a reduced price. Please use TomTom HOME to determine the actual cost.

All Map Update Service updates are purchased in one advance payment at the beginning of the service.

Map Update Service can only be purchased via TomTom HOME, so you will need to connect your device to your computer.

Once purchased, Map Update Service cannot be transferred to another TomTom GPS device.

Map Update Service is not compatible with the following devices: Carminat, Navigator 7 and pre-installed maps on SD Card.

Yeah Graham, bit rough. When I hooked it up to the laptop the other night it also asked me some thing about trusting other peoples updates etc, wasn't sure what it was about so didnt do it. Amazing when you buy all this stuff they never tell you everything eh. When we bought ours we were just told to hook upto the laptop once a month and will update everything automatically give you all the maps etc for free, nothing mentioned to me by the salesman that I would be required to pay for anything regarding the tom tom, I havnt bothered to buy anything as you have as I thought I had all the latest maps still not sure I understand what I'd be getting if I was to pay, for what ?? Tom Tom put out a NEW map every Quarter Eg Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. They were about $135 each.

In between you get FREE updates and alterations to your existing map.

Easiest way to see what you have is look at the version you have on your GPS and then go to Tom Tom maps and see what the latest version is.

At present its version 845.2661
