I am doing a trip across the Simpson in Sept, East to West, and one of our group is in a V8 petrol 100 series.
We are just wondering if anyone has done this trip in a similar vehicle, Birdsville to Mt Dare and would therefore have some fuel consumption figures. We will probably do most of the trip via the Rig Rd. At this stage we are looking at him carrying 2 jerry cans, about 160 usable litres. The figures quoted on the trek section of this site would seem a little conservative for a V8 petrol !
Look forward to your feedback, Cheers.

Mmm, all a bit old. I wonder if conditions are harder this year or not.

Would be good to see some current 2010 postings re fuel consumption.

Heard the other day, 2004 100s Auto 4.2TD Mt Dare to Poepells cr and back - 18.2l/100.

Hi TD100GXL,

I did a double crossing of the Simpson in my V8 100 series back in 2008. You will see my fuel usage under the Trek notes for 'Simpson Desert - Rig Road' (used 151 litres @ 22.4 l/100km) going from Mungerannie to Mt. Dare, and under 'Simpson Desert - WAA Line' (used 148 litres @ 26.3 l/100km) for the return trip from Mt. Dare to Birdsville (including over Big Red).

So, 2 jerry cans would probably be OK, but I would personally carry at least 1 more to have a greater margin for error.

Have a great trip !

Cheers, Mark.
