Last time I was on the Windorah Birdsville Rd was last year about this time and it was a well maintained outback dirt road.
A Rav 4 should have no problems with the reservation that the roads have many sharp flinty stones that could puncture the thin passenger tyres.

i did the Birdsville Developmental Road a couple of weeks ago, from Birdsville to Windorah and the road was in excellent condition, you could have taken the family commodore along it just about, so a RAV 4 will have no problems.
the road is dirt pretty much from when you turn off the Diamentina Developmental Road, there may have been about 10 klms of bitumin at the Diamentina end of the Birdsville Developmental Road, but that's about it at the most, rest is dirt until you are a few klms from Birdsville.
they had some rain out there last week and the road was closed for a short period, hopefully it didn't get damaged, but either way your RAV 4 should be fine.

Did you go in the same way you came out?

Or can you go from Birdsville to Winton through bedourie?

You can go via Bedourie and Boulia. The road is a mixture of bitumen and dirt and the dirt bits are worse than on the Development road but still no problem for a Rav4.

we came across the Simpson Desert from Mt. Dare to Birdsville, then onto Windorah and home to Brisbane.
that route in reverse may test your RAV 4 though ....lol

I think the owners of the Birdsville Pub had one and used to run down to Adelaide in it, had good tyres though.

Cheers

Birdsville to Windorah is approx 400 klms - 110 klms bitumen to the west of Windorah then very good dirt to Birdsville, recently graded by both Barcoo and Diamantina Shires. Small amount of rain on it last week.
A Rav4 or any vehicle is fine on it provided you drive according to the conditions and slightly lower the tyre pressure when you get to the dirt. Do not attempt to break any speed records and slow down when passing other vehicles either way to save stone chips on windscreens and windows.

G'day, I did it in a 1976 standard Falcon wagon 10 years ago without any problems so you won't either. We also did the whole Birdsville track to Adelaide with only punctures as we only had black road tyres & standard ride height! Now Windorah to Birdsville is a freeway compared to then! have a go!
